Description
(No Model.)
R. SORNBERGER'. Plow Gage.
No. 233,815. Patented Oct. 26, 1880.
INVENTOR t ATTORN EY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
RODNAY SORNBERGER, OF STANBRIDGE, QUEBEO, CANADA.
PLOW-GAG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,815, dated October` 26, 1880 Application filed August 18, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RODNAY SORNBERGER, of Stanbridge, in the county ot' Missisquoi and Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Plow-Gages; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figurel of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of this invention applied to a plow. Fig. 2 is a side view of the gage detached. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a front view.
This invention has relation to means for governing the movement of a plow, and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a surface-shoe having two adjustable standards to be bolted to the plow beam, and in connection therewith a furrow-shoe having adjustable arms and adapted to run against the landside, all as hereinafter shown and described. I In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the beam of a plow to which my attachment is represented as having been applied.
B indicates the surface-shoe, having its forward end elevated or curved up to give it a runner form, so that it will move readily over the surface of the ground. It is provided with two standards, U C, which are perforated, slotted, or otherwise provided with seats for the reception of bolts or fastenings, whereby they can be secured to the side of the plowbeam, so that the surface-shoe will run underneath the same. These arms or standards C C are also designed to be adjustable vertically, so that the distance of the surface-shoe below the beam may be easily regulated. ln the construction illustrated in the drawings the standards are represented as being vertically slotted, and thereby fitted for adjustment on the bolts b, which pass through the slots a.
(No model.)
D represents the furrow-shoe, the plane of which is vertical or at right angles to that of the surface-shoe. Its forward end is also turned or curved, but outward or away from the surface shoe, as it is designed to run against the land side of the furrow previously made by the plow. To this furrow-shoe are attached arms c, which are bent toward and extend through the perforations or slots of the standards O, and are adjustable therein both vertically, to regulate its position with reference to the depth of the furrow, and endwise, to regulate the width of the furrow. The position of the surface-shoe regulates the depth of the furrow. The adjustment of the arms c is secured by means of nuts d, placed on each side of the standards C, or by other suitable fastening devices. In the construction illustrated the ends of the arms 0 are threaded for engagement with the holding-nuts d.
By means of this gage attachment the depth and width of the furrow can easily be regulated even by one who is unused to handling a plow. Auniform depth and width are given, and an even and steady running motion imparted to the plow. It greatly lessens the labor of the plowman in holding the plow, and enables him to do better work than he could do without it.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the surface-shoe B and its adjustable arms or standards O C, of the furrow-shoe D, vertically arranged, and its adjustable arms c c,for1ning a gage to regulate the depth and width of the furrow, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
RODN AY SORNBERGER.
