IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,958, dated August 13, 1878 application filed June 19, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES RMGI/VANE,

of Vytheville, in the county of WVythe and- State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the plow complete. Fig. 2 is a view of the mold-board, from which the share and colter have been removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the colter. Fig. at is asectional view of the plow laid longitudinally through the beam and Fig. 5 is a section on the line w :r, Fig. 4.

My invention relates to the construction and method of securing the colter to the moldboard of my improved plow without the aid of screws, bolts, or other fastening devices, as I shall now proceed more fully to describe with reference to the drawings, in which- A is the mold-board of my improved plow, having at its front end an upright, 13, provided at the top with a cross-piece, O.

In a groove, to, in cross-piece O fits a link, D, through which passes the beam E. Under the upper end of the link is inserted a grooved metallic block, F, between which and the beam I secure a wedge, G, by means of which and the link the beam is thus firmly secured to the upright B of the mold-board.

The front of the mold-board is grooved, as shown at b, to receive the colter H, which is provided with an upwardly-projecting shank,

The edge of the colter is provided with a downwardly-tapering recess, (1, fitting over a correspondingly-shaped stud, 0, upon the mold-board, the eifect of which is to keep the colter immovably in position, when adjusted.

At its lower end the colter H has a triangular groove or recess, f, accommodating a correspondin g projection upon the share J. The latter is also provided a suitable recess to fit over the point K of the mold-board, to which it is secured with a screw or bolt, L, thus keeping the colter securely in position. The share is also provided with a rearwardly-projectingtongue or point, 1, fitting under the mold-board, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to prevent it from being displaced while in operation.

By this construction a smooth upper surface of the plow is produced, which prevents the soil from adhering during operation; and by simply removing the bolt L the share and colter may be readily detached for sharpening or repairs.

The handles M M are secured respectively to the inner sides of the mold-board and landside. They are connected in the usual manner by a round, N.

O is a plate or bracket, secured by a screw or some other suitable means to one of the handles, and having at its inner end a downwardly-projecting arm, h, provided with a perforation, i, for the round N. P is a hook, catching over the front side, Q, of bracket 0, and passing through a suitable perforation, j, in the beam, at the upper side of which it is secured with a nut or burr, R, for which purpose its end is screw-threaded. It will thus be seen that simply by loosening the nut R the beam may be readily adjusted laterally, thus adjusting the draft in relation to the share to any desired extent, while by tightening the nut the beam is firmly secured in position. The beam being secured to the plow only by the link D in the manner described, such lateral adjustment may at all times be easily effected.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the colter H, having shank I, downwardly-tapering recess 61, and groove or recess f, with the beam E, having perforation c, mold-board A, having groove 1) and projecting lug e, and share J, the latter arranged, as herein described, to be secured to the mold-board by a single screw or bolt, which also serves to secure the colter iu'position, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
