Description

J. I. A'sE. Plow.
Patented July 13, 18 80,
N. PETERs. PHOTO-LITHDORAPHER. WASHINQYON. D, O,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEROME I. CASE, OF RAGINE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE J. I. CASE PLOW COMPANY,
OF SAME PLACE.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 229,954, dated July 13, 1880.
Application filed April 5, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEROME I. OAsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains ro to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrought-metal plows in which the rear brace between the landside and mold-board, at the bottom of the plow, passes through an eye in the lower end of the curved metal standard or plow-beam in such manner that the said standard or beam may be adjusted laterally on said brace; and the objects of my improvements are to brace the plow-beamin such manner as to aid in resisting the strain of the draft on the connection of the standard or beam to the brace. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow embodying my invention, partly broken away.
0 Fig.2 is a bottom plan, seen from below.
The same reference-letter indicates the same part in the different figures of the drawings.
A is the mold-board, B the share, 0 the landsidc-bar, D the beam, E the handles, F the 3 5 handle-braces, and G the rear bottom brace, of an ordinary wrought-metal plow of that class in which the standard or beam is curved so as to stand clear of the top of the mold-board, and has an eye, d, at its lower end, through 0 which eye the brace G passes, so as to permit of adjusting the beam D laterally thereon, and being retained after adjustment by a setscrew, g.
(No model.)
D is an extension of the lower end of the beam D, and has a transverse slot, h, in its end, 5 through which a bolt, it, passes to secure it to the share B. Lugs I project laterally from the extension D, and have slots t", through which bolts 2' t' pass and respectively through the mold-board and share. The extension D, bolted to the mold-board and share, forms an effectual brace andstrengthens the connect ion of the beam to the brace Gr, so that the heavy "strain to which it is subjected in operation will not strain nor twist the brace G nor tear the beam loose from it, and by loosening the nuts on the bolts h it the respective slots through which they pass will permit of lateral adjustment of the beam in the evident manner.
The extension D may be constructed in va- 6o rious forms, and bolted alone to the moldboard, to the share, or to any fixed plate or frog beneath the plow, my claim not being limited to its particular form, or to the particular manner of its attachment to the moldboard and share; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a plow, the extension D, adapted to brace the beam D, in combination with the 7o brace G, to which the beam is attached and adapted to be laterally adjusted thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2., In combination with the mold-board and landside of a plow and a curved beam having an eye by which it is made laterally adjustable on the brace G, the extension I), having transverse slots through which bolts pass to secure it to the mold-board, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JEROME I. CASE.
