TILTING GOLTER HOLDER. No. 403,551. Patented May 21, 1889.
'1 ii jwtnmmmml UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM IIUMPHRY PERRIN, OF SMITHS FALLS, ONTARIO, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BENJAMIN OOLBORNE, OF SAME PLACE.
TILTING COLTER-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 403,551, dated May 21, 1889.
Application filed October 11, 1888. Serial No. 287,817. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM IIUMPHRY PERRIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smiths Falls, in the county of Iianark and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in TiltingUolter-lIolders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in colters and their attachments; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow-beam having a colter embodying the invention attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the colter, beam, and attachments. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section through the locking strap or clip of the colter.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A dosignates the plow-beam, of ordinary construction; and B, the colter, provided with the lon- 2 5 gitudinal series of unthreaded openings 1) for its vertical adjustment.
C is a locking strap or clip ridii'ig upon the beam and connecting the colter thereto. The said clip is composed of a top portion, 0, rest ing upon the upper edge of the beam A, a bottom portion, 0, resting against the lower edge thereof in rear of the top portion, and two downwardly and rearwardly inclined side portions, 0 0 respectively, the former of which rests against one side of the plow-beam, while the colter passes between the other side and the opposite side of the beam and will incline downward and forward therein, because the top of the strap or clip is in front of the bottom thereof. The space between said top and bottom is sufficiently longer than the colter is wide to permit thelatter to swing or tilt therein.
D a set screw that passes through a threaded opening in the side of the clip 0 and through any one of the openings 1), the end of said screw im 'iinging 011 the adjacent side of the plowbeam, and the part in the opening I) being unthreaded.
By means of the set-screw and openings 1) the colter can be adjusted to differentheights on the plow beam and also longitudinalty thereon, as the screw can be loosened, the col ter moved to another position, and the screw again tightened. As the colter swings or tilts on the screw D, upon which it is fulcruincd, a stone, stick, root, or other impediment can pass between the point of the colter and point of the plov Without sticking therebetween and impeding the progress of the plow, as the colter will tilt up and release said impediment.
Having described my invention, I claim The combination, with the plow-beam, of the colter arranged adjacent to one side of the beam and having a longitudinal series of transverse openings, the clip-plate passing around the beam and the colter and having the-top c, resting on top of the beam, the bottom 0, bearing against the bottom of the beam in a Vertical plane in rear of the vertical plane of the top 0, and the downwardly and rearwardly inclined sides 0 (2, connecting the top and bottom, the side 0 having a perforation and bearing against the side of the colter, and the side 0 bearing against the side of the beam, and the set-screw mounted in the perforation in the side c, and passing through one of the openings in the colter, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HUMPIIRY PERRIN.
