Y CALVIN R. DAVIS, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO OLIVER OI-IILLED PLOW WORKS, OF `SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
PLOW.
SEIECFLCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,503, dated August 18, 1903.
Application filed March 19,1903. Serial 110.148,598. (No model.)
To (all whom, t may concern:
Beit known that I, CALVIN R. DAvIs, a resident of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented 5 certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in plo'ws, and more particularly to that class of plows known as double moldboard or middle-breaker plows, the object of the invention being to provide an improved depth runner or shoe, improved adjustable mounting therefor, and improved adjustable mounting for the tin-cutter, to permit separate and independent adjustment of either the fin-cutter or runner without disturbing the other, and, further, to provide improved means for securing the frog to the standard, all resulting in a plow of simple construction, easy to adjust, perfect in operation, neat and attractive in appearance, and strong` and durable in use.
With these objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and. arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view inlongitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a rear view in elevation. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged view in detail illustrating the depth runner or shoe and fin-cutter.
l represents the plow-beam, curved downward at its rear end, forming the standard A, to which is secured a double frog 2 by means of a bolt 3 near the lower end of standard A, projecting through the same and frog and secured in place by nut 4. Theupper end of the frog is secured to the standard by anglebrackets 5, secured to opposite sides of the standard by a bolt 6 and to the frog 2 by bolts 7.
The double share 8 and double moldboard 9 are secured to frog 2 by bolts, as shown, andare secured together on their rear face at their meeting edges by metal straps 10, and the moldboard has secured thereto rearwardly-projecting bars 11 for the attachment of the plow-handles. (Not shown.)
My improved depth runner or shoe 12 comprises an integral casting bifurcated at one end to receive standard A and made with alined perforations in its bifurcated end to receive a pivot-bolt 13, also passed through a hole in standard A, and preferably secured in place by a Cotter-pin 14. The rear end of the runner or shoe 12 has a central web 15, made with an elongated slot 1G for the reception of a clamping-bolt 17, securing braces 18 thereto. The upper ends of the braces 18 are secured to the moldboard by the bolts 19, which secure bars 11 thereto. This slot 16 permits of the adjustment of the runner or shoe to the position desired, and it is clamped in such position by bolt 17. The runner or shoe 12 has an elongated V longitudinal slot 2O for the iin-cutter 21, which latter is of the general triangular shape shown and has an opening at its forward contracted end to receive a' bolt 22, passed through the runner or shoe and pivotally supporting the iinicutter therein.
The wider or rear end of the iin-cutter is provided with an elongated slot 23, curved in the arc of a circle concentric with the pivotal point thereof, and a bolt 24 is supported in an ear 25 on runner l2 and located in slot 23, so as to clamp the fin-cutter in any position to which it may be adj usted. It will thus be seen that the fin-cutter can be adjusted in the runner or shoe without disturbing the latter in the slightest, and the runner can be adjusted without disturbing the iin-cutter. This is a decided improvement over devices of this character heretofore known, and the construction of plow is neat .in appearance, simple in construction and operation, and strong and durable in use.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from myinvention, and hence I do not confine myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what ICO - I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a plow, the combination with a standard, of a depth-runner pivoted thereto, a -fincutter pivoted to the runner and movable in a slot therein, said iin having an elongated slot near its rear end and a clamping-bolt carried by the runner at a point intermediate of the ends thereof and located in said elongated slot in the fin-cutter to clamp the latter in any position.
2. In a plow, the combination with a standard, of a double frog, angle-brackets on op- 'posite sides of the standard, a bolt securing the brackets to the standard, and bolts securing them to the frog, a double share and moldboard secured to the frog, handle braces or bars secured to the' moldboard, a depth-runner pivoted to the standard, brace-rods connecting the runner with the handle braces or bars at the point of their attachment with the moldboard, and a fin-cutter carried by the runner. j
3. In a plow, the combination with a standard, of a double frog, a bolt passed through the frog and standard and secured in place by a nut, angle-brackets on opposite sides of the standard, a bolt passed through both of said brackets and standard and secured in place by a nut, and bolts and nuts securing the angle-brackets to the frog, and a double share and double moldboard secured to the frog. Y
In testimony whereof I have signed this specication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
