Description

(No Medel.)4
J. D. HENDERSON.
PLOW.
Patented Sept. 13, 1887.
STATES JAMES DOUGLAS HENDERSON, OF HAVEN, KANSAS.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,788, dated September 13, 1867.
Application filed July 18, 1887. Serial No. 244,651.
.To @ZZ whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES DoUGLAs HEN- DERSON, a citizen o f the United States, residing at Haven, in the county of Reno and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful In1 provement in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in plows; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow embodying my improvements, with the mold-board and the share removed. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same with the mold-board and share attached to the plow. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line x x of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is partly a top plan view and partly a horizontal sectional view taken on the line y g/ of Fig. 2.
A represents the lan dside of the plow, to the front end of which is attached a diverging rearwardlydextending bed-plate, B, which is inclined at a suitable angle and has its outer side curved, as shown. A brace, C, is attached to the under side of the bedpiece, near the rear end thereof, and extends to and is attached to the inner side of the landside at a suitable distance from the rear end thereof. The bed-plate B is provided with two series, D and E, of oblique parallel slots.
F represents the plow-beam, which is preferably made of metal and has its rear end curved downward to form a standard, G, the lower end of which is provided with a T- shaped foot that is bolted to the inner side of the landside at a suitable distance in advance of the brace C.
I represents a handle, which has its lower end bolted to the inner side of the landside just in rear of the brace O. 4This handle is connected to the plow-beam by means of a brace-rod, K.
L represents the plowshare, which is of the ordinary construction and is adapted to lit on the lower portion of the face of the bedplate B. The said plowshare is attached to the said bed-plate by means of bolts M, which extend through the slots D.
N represents the mold-board, which is also (No model.)
of the usual construction and has its lower portion secured on the upper portion of the bed-plate B by means of bolts O, which extend through the slots E.
P represents a frog, which is bent in the form indicated in Fig. 4, and has one arm ,bolted to the inner side of the plow-standard.
The long arm of the frog bears against the inner side of the mold-board, near the center thereof, and is provided with an oblique slot, R, which is arranged at the same angle with the slots D and Il A bolt, S, passes through the Inoldboard and through the slot R, and serves to clamp the mold-board to the frog, as will bereadily understood.
T represents a plow-handle, which has its lower end provided with slots U, that correspond to the inclination of the slots D, E, and R. rlhelower end of this handle bears against the inner side of the moldboard, near the rear edge thereof, and is secured thereto by means of bolts V, that extend through the mold-board and through the slots U. The handle T is connected to the handle I by means of cross-` bars 1V.
The operation of my invention is as follows: By providing the bed-plate, the frog, and the inner handle with the oblique slots the plowshare and mold-board may be adjusted vertically thereon, thus permitting the same to be moved downward as the plowshare wears away,in order to compensate for the wear` thereof7 and thereby add greatly to the durability of the plowshare, as it enables the same to be used until nearly half of it has been worn away before rendering it necessary to remove he plowshare and substitute another in its stead.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction hereinbefore described, as it will be readily understood that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I clainrm l. In a plow, the combination of lthe landside having the diagonally-slotted lbed-plate the brace O, connecting the landside to the rear portion of the bed-plate, the standard attached to the landside, the frog attached to the standard and having the slot R, and the ICO mold-board and share attaehed to a frog and to the bed-plate by bolts extending through the slots therein, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a plow, of the landsde having the slotted bed-plate B, the standard having slotted frog R, the share secured to the bed-plate by bolts which pass through some of the slots thereof, the mold-board attached to the bed-plate above the share by means of bolts which extend through the remaining slots in the bed-plate, and the bolt S, connecting the mold-board to the frog and eX- tending through the slot in the latter to the handles, oneof which bears against the moldboard and is provided with slots adapted to I5 receive bolts to clamp the mold-board thereto, all combined and arranged to operate substantially as described.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in preszo ence of two Witnesses.
Witnesses: l,
LEVI CHARLES, W. L. Woons.
