SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,802, dated March 10, 1891.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, IRVIN WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonham,
in the county of Fannin and State of Texas,
have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in reversible hillside-plows.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of reversible hillside-plows and enable the plowshare to be rapidly changed from one side of the plow to the other and to move in front of the standard and over the foot of the same and obviate the necessity of lifting the entire plow every time it is desired to change the position of the plowshare.
A further object of the invention is to enable the plowshare to be moved from one position to the other by the foot and to provide means for automatically locking the share after it has been reversed.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow constnucted in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, to show the rod by which the plow-point is pivoted. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the standard. Fig. 5 is a detailview of the shoe. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a plow-beam, which has secured by bolts to its rear end a standard 2, whose foot 3 is provided upon both sides with recesses 24 to receive a shoe 25, which forms a landside, and the plow-point i and moldboard 5 are pivoted to the foot and adapted to be turned and arranged upon either side of the plow to adapt the plow for the cultivation of hillsides, and by this construction the plow-point and mold-board turn in front of the standard and above the foot, thereby obviating the necessity of raising the plow every time it is reversed, as is the case where the mold-board and point turn below the foot and to the side of the standard. The plow-point at has two similar cuttingblades 6, thatarearranged at an angle with each other and areadapted to align with a colter 7 and form a continuous cutting-edge from the point to the plow-beam, and the V I blades 6 have their inner edges 8 rabbeted and secured to a re-enforcing plate 9. The f n1old-board 5 has its front edges conforming to the configuration of the edges 8 of the plow-point and secured to the re-enforcing plate which lies in the rabbeted portions, and
the plow-point and the mold-board form a continuous unbroken surface.-
The re-enforcing plate is provided at its front edge with a depending flange'lO, which fits against a shoulder 11 of the plow-point, and the said re-enforcing plate and plow-point are provided with a recess or bearing to receive the pivot 28 and are adapted to be turned on the same to bring either side of the plow-point in a line with the colter 7 and to permit the plow to be reversed. The rear of the mold-board is supported by a brace 13, whose diverging arms are bolted to the under side of the mold-board, and whose lower end or apex is rigidly secured to a shaft 12 and turns with the same in order to hold the shaft in position and maintain the plowshare atv either side of the plow. When it is desired to remove the point of the mold-board, the bolts are removed from the arms of the brace and the parts can be taken from the pivot 28. The shaft is journaled in the standard and is provided at its rear end just above the heel of the standard with diverging arms 15, that are adapted to align with the rear edge of the standard and to be engaged by a gravitylatch 16, that is pivoted to the standard and provided with a notch 17 to engage the end 18 of one of the diverging arms 15. The ends 18 of the diverging arms are bent at an angle, and when an arm is vertical the end 18 lies approximately horizontal and the other arm is in convenient position to be raised by the foot of the operator to reverse the plow. The edges of the latch 16 upon each side of notch 17 are beveled, and when the end 18 comes in contact with one of the beveled edges the latch is raised and drops when the end 18 arrives at the notch and locks-the'arrn and the plowshare in position. It will thus be seen that as the plowshare is moved from one side to the other it will be automatically locked and retained in position until released by the operator preparatory to again reversing the share. The gravity-latch lfi'is provided with parallel side pieces 19, which are pivoted on each side of the standard in a recessed portion, and the gravitylatch is limited in its downward movement by the shoulders 20 of the recess.

Having'thus described my invention, what:
I claimis 1. In a hillside-plow, the combination of thestand'ard, the shaft journaled in the foot of" the standard, the plow-point pivoted at.
the-front of the standard, the diverging arms arranged at the rear end of the shaft, and
the'standard, the depending colter, the shaft journaledinthefoot of the standard,.and-the plow-point pivoted to the front of the standard 7 and consisting of similar blades 6, arranged at the standard, the shaft journaled in the foot of the standard, the mold-board, the diverging arm rigidly attached to the rear end of the share and adapted to align with the standard, and the gravity-latch pivoted near the upper end of the standard and provided with a notch to engage the divergingarm and havingits edges upon each side of the notch beveled, substantially as and for the purpose described.

In a hillside-plow, the combination of the standard, the depending. colter,,the shaft journale'd in the footoffthe standard, andthe' plow-point pivoted'to the front ofthesstandardand having its cutting-edges adapted/to align with the colter and: form a continuous cutting-edgefrom the point to'theplow-beam, substantially as described 5.
