Application filed November 13, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atehison, in the county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cultivators of the parallel runner type adapted especially for the listing of corn, but also adapted to be used for a straddle row cultivator in connection with the raising of other crops.
The two main objects of the invention are to construct a simple and inexpensive device of this character, and one which will not throw the dirt on to the young plants.
The invention also consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cultivator.
Fig. 2 is a front end elevation.
Fig. 3 is a vertical, transverse section, taken through the forward pair of subsoilers.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section through one of the cutting points.
In the drawings 1 designates a draft beam, provided with the usual means for attaching a team thereto.
Suitable metal arches or yokes 2 are bolted to the underside of the said beam, and to the side members of the arches are secured parallel runners 3, said runners being in the form of vertically arrangedboards, with the arches secured to their inner faces, and
spacing them apart.
The lower edge of each runner is shod with a metal shoe 4, if the runners are of wood. The front ends of the runners are inclined downwardly and forwardly and the shoes are of greater length than the runners. Each shoe near its forward end is provided with an upwardly and rearwardly extending tongue 5 which engages and is secured to the inclined end of the runner to which the shoe is attached.
In advance of said tongues the shoes are shaped to form cutting points, being beveled Specification of Letters Patent.

from the point of juncture with the tongues to the end and also to the outer edge of the shoe, and the ends are cut obliquely so as to come to a sharp point at the inner end corner of each shoe.
These cutting points, 6, not only aid in making a light draft for the cultivator, but tend to throw the soil away from and not on the small plants, so that it is not necessary to follow the cultivator with a hoe to uncover them.
Carried by the outer face of each runner are a pair of subsoilers 7, the front one being in a higher plane than the rear one. As shown they are angled, the cutting portion extending horizontally from the runner and the vertical portion being adjustably secured thereto, so that the horizontal portion can be adjusted to cut at different depths, or the vertical distance between the rear and front cutting members may be changed to suit requirements, and the nature of the work to'be done, or the soil to be worked in. In practice, however, it is advisable that the rear subsoiler be flush with the bottom of the shoe 7, and wear on the shoe is compensated for by vertical adjustment of the rear subsoiler. The vertical portions of the subsoilers are slotted as at 7 to allow for proper adjustment.
The use and advantages of the device are obvious.
Handles 8 are secured to the runners in any desired manner, or may be connected to the beam 1.
hat I claim is 1. In a cultivator, the combination of a pair of runners connected to each other, shoes carried by the lower edges of said runners and projecting in advance of them to form cutting points, said points being obliquely beveled, slanting rearwardly and sharpened, a draft beam connected to said runners, and handles attached to the said runners.
2. In a cultivator, the combination with a pair of parallel runners, of arches connecting and spacing said runners, the arches being secured to the inner faces of the runners, said runners sloping downwardly and forwardly at their front ends and having projecting cutting members, said cutting members sloping forwardly and laterally, and having their front end portions cut obliquely, outwardly and rearwardly, a draft beam secured to said arches, handles attached to the runners and adjustable subsoilers secured to said runners in pairs, the subsoilers of each pair being in diiferent vertical planes. 7 V
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
SAMUEL J. ALLEN.
