PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,656, dated June 29, 1886.
' Application filed April 52S, 1886.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARSHALL JAMES I-IA'roHnR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ol Macon, countyof Bibb, State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Irnprovements in Flows, of which the following is a full and eXaet description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciiication.
The invention consists in certain combinations of parts and in details of construction, hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
Figure l is a perspective view of the upper part of my plow-foot or share-holder. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the under side of same; Fig. 3, a like view of one of the side sweeps or wings. Fig. 4 represents the share or plowpoint; and Fig. 5 is a perspective View, on a reduced scale, of my invention complete and ready for attachment to a plow-standard.
On the drawings, the letter A designates the plow-foot or share-holder, the sides of which are provided with grooves b c and lugs d d. rlhe center of the plow-foot or shareholder is provided with a recess, e, and in the bottom thereof with a bolt hole or slot, f, for the reception of a bolt, whereby the plowpoint H is designed to be secured thereto. The plow-point H. is made of a lozenge or diamond shape, with bolt-holes near the opposite points thereof, in order that it may readily be reversed when the operating-point becomes too much worn for use. The usual curvature is given the point to enable it to cut through and throw oil' the earth, as well as to provide for its fitting snugly against the plow-foot or share-holder, to which it is adapted to be rigyis idly secured by means of a bolt, as shown at c' in Fig. 5.
The letters I l designate a pair of side sweeps or wings, the front and rear edges of which are provided with cutting-edges,to permit of their being reversed as occasion may require. The opposite ends of these sweeps or wings are cut at such angle that when either of the said ends are inserted in the grooved sides of the plow-foot their outer ends shall be about parallel therewith, but inclined to the rear thereof, and each sweep shall have a rear inclination, the angle of which shall depend on Serial No. 200,460. (No model.)
the groove employed. The said sweeps are rigidly held in either groove by means of bolts, which are adapted to iit holes made in the lugs d cl, and in suitable holes that are formed for said purpose near each end of the sweeps, as shown at @o in Figs. 3 and 5. The under surface of the plow-foot is provided with a lug, 7c, having an even width but increasing depth as it extends rearward from its starting-point at the forward edge of the plow-feot. To this lug is fitted the landside L, the forward por- 'tion of which is of similar inclination to the lug, and provided with a side inortise, Z, so as to fit snugly against same and in close contact with the adjacent surface of the plow-foot, in which position it is rnily held by a bolt, m, which is .inserted in bolt-holes made in both landside and lng for the reception of same.
From the above description it will be seen that when the plow point or sweep becomes dull or in anywise injured it can be readily reversed, and thus new cutting-edges be arranged for action without having to leave the field, or to carry thereto additional or duplicate parts, as heretofore.
In the application of my invention, instead of connecting the parts together as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the plow standard should be shown between the share -holder and share, with the single fastening-bolt i passing through the three pieces, the share being secured to the front of the standard and the share-holder or plow-foot at the rear thereof, and the reversible side sweeps should be shown with their iiat sides instead oi beveled surfaces to the front.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A plow-foot or share-holder having a central hole or slot, f, a pair of outwardlyprojecting lugs at the sides thereof, a. series of 4grooves immediately above said lugs, each groove inclined toward the point of the holder, as described, and a landside-lug near the center of the under surface of the holder, sub stantially as described, and` for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a plow-foot or shareholder provided with-side lugs having beltholes therein, and a series oi' side grooves above same, as described, withfthe reversible as described, in combination with a diamond sweeps having holt-holes near each end thereshaped reversible share having bolt-holes in K of, and the bolts whereby the sweeps sire se-l the opposite pointsthereof, aiidaholtforsecnr- Cured,' substantially as and for the purpose ing the said share in front of the holder, sub- 15 5 specified. stantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
3. The share-holder or plow-foot provided In testimony whereof I affix my signature `With a central bolt-hole, a series of grooves at in presence of two witnesses.
