ATTORNEY WITNESSES STAT AN @FIQE.
PLOWSHARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1919.
Application filed June 8, 1917. Serial No. 173,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE FARRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miles City, in the county of Custer and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plowshares, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in plows and more particularly in plow points.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a plow point which is adapted to be detachably connected with a plow and may be readily removed therefrom for the purpose of sharpening or repairing or in order to substitute an entirely new point.
Another object of the invention resides in the means employed for securingthe point to the share whereby said point will be held with suflicient rigidity to enable the same to function properly.
The above and other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the landside and point connected together.
Fig. 2 is a view looking at the bottom of the construction shown in Fig. 1 and further illustrating the manner of attaching the plow point in position.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective of, the detachable plow point, and
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 indicates the moldboard of the plow and 2 the detachable plow point. Formed in the forward end of the landside of the plow 1 is a horizontal recess 3 which as shown in Fig. 3 has a groove 4 extending longitudinally along one side thereof and communicates with a slot 5. This slot 5 is formed in the bottom wall or floor of the recess and extends inwardly from the forward edge of the landside for a distance approximating more than one half the length of said recess, as indicated in Fig. 2.
On the plow point 2 is formed a projecting tongue 6 the lower portion of which is adapted to be received in the recess 3 and is equipped with a longitudinal rib 7 which enters the groove 4.. Formed on the lower cdgeof the tongue 6 is a key 8 which has its end terminating in spaced relation to the end of the tongue and corresponds in length.
with the slot 5 in which it is adapted to be snugly received. To prevent accidental withdrawal of the tongue 6 from the recess 7 I provide the fastening screw or bolt 9 which extends through an opening in the bottom of said groove and is engaged with the lower edge of said tongue in the manner shown.
On opposite sides of the tongue 6 are the shoulders 10 and 11 which are adapted to engage the forward end of the landside on either side of the recess 3. As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 only the lower portion of the tongue carrying the rib 7 and the key 8 is received in the recess 6, while the upper portion of said tongue is curved to 'lie snugly against the side of the moldboard.
In this connection it will be seen that the plow point is securely braced against wabbling motion in any direction by means of the shoulders 10 and 11 the key 8 and the portion of the tongue lying against the side of the moldboard.
In the foregoing description and accompanying drawings I have described in detail the preferred embodiment of my invention but I wish to be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts disclosed therein but reserve the right to make such changes as may be desired providing the same come within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim 1. A. plow comprising a landside having a recess formed therein and equipped with a groove extending along one side of said recess, a plow point, a tongue formed on said point and adapted to enter said recess and a rib carried by said tongue and adapted to be received in said groove.
2. A plow comprising a landside having a recess formed in the forward end thereof and with a slot communicating with said recess, a plow point provided with a tongue adapted to be received in said recess, and a key formed on said tongue adapted to enter said slot.
3. A plow comprising a landside having a longitudinal recess formed in the same, said recess having a groove extending along one side thereof and a slot extending along the bottom thereof, a plow point equipped with a tongueadapted to enter said recess, a rib carried by said tongue and adapted to be received in said groove, and a key formed on the lower edge of said tongue and adapted to enter said slot.
4:. A plow comprising a landside having a longitudinal recess formed in the forward end thereof, said recess having a groove extending along one side thereof and a slot exmesses tending along the bottom thereof, a plow 15 point having a tongue'adapted to be received in said recess, a rib carried by said tongue to enter said groove, and a key formed on the lower edge of said tongue to enter said slot, and shoulders formed on either side of the tongue and adapted to abut the forward end of the l'andside.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE FARRELL.
