WILLIAM J. HERSOHER, OF BUGKINGHAM, ILLINOIS.
CULTIVATOR-SHOVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1909.
Application filed. August 31, 1908. Serial N0. 451,006.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. HERsoHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buckingham, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivator- Shovels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in cultivator shovels, plow points and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical device of this character which has a detachable point section and improved means for securing and bracing the same.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention. consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved shovel; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical section; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the detachable point section.
The preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings is in the form of a cultivator shovel and comprises an upper or body section 1, a lower point section 2 and a centrally disposed longitudinally extending rib or brace 3, which is attached to the rear face of the body section 1 by means of a removable transversely extending bolt or fastening 1 1. These parts or sections may be of any suitable size or shape but, as illustrated, the body section 1 is of rectangular form and curved longitudinally. The rib 3 is formed with a rearwardly projecting loop 4 to provide an attaching socket for the reception of the lower end of a plow standard S, or the like of the cultivator, plow or other implement, and is secured thereto by means of a set screw 12. The rib 3 is also formed with an extended lower end 5 which serves as a brace and support for the point section 2. This brace 5 is in the form of an arm having its upper portion spaced from the body section 1 by means of a laterally extending groove 5 cut across its inner face and the lower portion providing a supporting shoulder 6 for the point sectlon 2. The point section 2, as illustrated, is substantiallytriangularshaped and has a slight longitudinal curvature, the edges of its point being slightly beveled and its upper end being formed with a transversely extending and rearwardly offset tongue 7. The latter is adapted to slide laterally between the lower end of the body section and in the groove 5 of the brace arm 5 and it forms u on the front face of said section a slightly eveled, transverse shoulder 8 to engage the lower end of the body section 1 and upon the rear face of said point section 2 is a transverse shoulder 9 to engage the groove 5" of the brace arm 5. The provision of the stop shoulders 8, 9 and 6 prevents the point section from shifting vertically while the brace arm 5 serves to support the point section. The latter is prevented from shift ing laterally by a bolt or equivalent remov able transverse fastening 10 which is passed through the point section 2 and the lower portion of the brace arm 5 as clearly shown in drawings. When said fastening 10 is removed the point section may be slid laterally in either direction and removed from the body section 1 and the rib 3 so that it may be sharpened or re laced by a new point section if necessary. T 1e peculiar interlocking connection between the three sections or parts of the shovel not only causes them to be rigidly united, but also permits them to be easily separated which if any of the sections become worn or broken it maybe easily replaced by a new one.
Having thus is claimed is:
A cultivator shovel or the like comprising a body section, a removable point section formed at its top with the transversely extending, laterally and rearwardly ofi'set tongue 7 to provide the shoulder 8 and the shoulder 9, and a bracing arm carried by the rear face of the body section and having the portion 5 projecting below the bottom edge of said body section and formed upon its front or outer face with the transversely extending groove 5 disposed partially beneath the body section and forming the shoulder 6, said groove 5 being adapted to receive the tongue 7 when the body and point sections are slid laterally or transversely with respect to each other and with the bottom edge of the body section in contact with the shoulder 8 of the point section, the engagedescribed the invention what ment of the shoulder 9 on the point section point section against lateral shifting movewith the shoulder 6 on the lower portion 5 ment. I V U 10 01' the bracing arm tending to prevent In testimony whereofI hereunto afiix' my longitudinal shifting movement of the body signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
and point sections with respect to each WILLIAM J. HERSCHER. other, and a transverse fastening passed Witnesses: through the point section and the lower J. H. MERRILL,
portion of the bracing arm to hold the O. L. TRACY.
