Description
H. C. BEEBE. Shovel-Plow Point.
No. 223,309. Patented Jan. 6, I880.
WITNESSES INVENTUB N. PETERS. PHOTD LITHOGRAPMER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. BEEBE, OF CANTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD OF HIS RIGHT TO M. F. BEEBE, OF SAME PLACE.
SHOVEL-PLOW POINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,309, dated January 6, 1880.
Application filed November 14, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY QBEEBE, of Canton, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovel-Plow Points; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked there on, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvemen ts in the construction of plows of that class in which the plowshare is provided with a detachable steel or chilled-iron point, which may be readily removed and replaced when worn or injured; and it has for its object to provide an improved means for securing the detachable point to the plowshare.
To this end the invention consists in forming the plowshare with a beveled front edge, and providing the plow-point at its rear with a shank adapted to set under the lower side of the plowshare, and with a shoulder having a re-enterin g bevel, in which the beveled front edge of the plowshare is adapted to engage, the shank of the plow-point being provided with one or more projections adapted to fit into corresponding recesses in the under side of the plowshare, the parts being secured together by means of a suitable bolt or bolts or other similar fastening device or devices, as more fully hereinafter specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a 1011- gitudinal sectional view of myimproved plow share and point; Fig. 2, a top view, thereof. Fi 3 represents a top view of a modification of my invention, and Fig. 4. a longitudinal section thereof.
The letter A indicates the plowshare, which may be formed as shown in Figs. 2 or 3, as may be desired, having a beveled front edge, B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
The letter 0 indicates the plow-point, which is formed of chilled iron or steel, and with a shank, D, at its rear, which is adapted to fit closely to the under side of the plowshare when the point is in position.
The letter E indicates a shoulder on the plowpoint, provided with a re-entering bevel, F, in which the front'beveled edge is adapted to engage when the point is in position.
The shank D is provided with one or more conical projections, G, on the surface adjoining the plowshare, which are adapted to engage in a corresponding recess or recesses, H, on the plowshare. It is evident, however, that the recesses may be made in the shank and the projections on the plowsharewithout departing from the spirit of my invention.
The letter I indicates a screw or bolt, by means of which the parts are secured together.
It will be perceived that as constructed the bevel and recess, in connection with the projection and recess on the plow share and point,
will hold the parts together against all lateral strain, relieving the connecting screw or bolt of such strain, and consequently greatly increasing the strength of the point, while the parts can be taken apart with as much ease and facility as if the screw or bolt alone were used to connect the parts.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The herein-described shovel-plow point, consisting of the plowshare A, having the beveled front edge, B, and recesses H, and the plow- 'pointO, havinga shank, D, adapted to fit closely to the under side of the plowshare, the shoulder E, provided with a re-entering bevel, F, and the conical projections G, adapted to e11- gage with the recesses H in the plowshare, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of July, 1879.
HENRY (J. BEEBE. Witnesses:
O. D. HOBLITT, C. D. BABCOCK.
