Description
PATENTED APR. 25, 1905.

PLOW POINT.
Patented April 25, 1905.
ATENT Fries.
\VALTER H. HUXFORI), OF HUXFORD, MISSISSIPPI.
PLOW-POINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,137, dated April 25, 1905.
Application filed May 11,1904. Serial No. 207,450.
To 1/71 'IIILOHL it many con/corn:
Be it known that Lll'inxrni-z H. lrIuxronn, a citizen of the United States, residing at I'Iuxford, in the county of Hancock and State of )Iississippi, have invented a new and useful Plow-Point, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in plow-points.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of plow-points and to provide a detachable one which will be simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction and which will possess substantially the strength and durability of a solid point.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which when a plow-point becomes worn will enable the same to be readily removed and renewed without the services of a skilled mechanic.
\Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of a plowshare provided with a point con structed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. isa detail sectional view on the line i t of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the plow-point.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the d rawings.
l designates a plowshare which is in the form of a sweep; but the detachable plowpoint 2 is applicable to various center-point plows. The plowshare is provided at the front with an approximately V-shaped cutaway portion or recess 3, having side edges arranged approximately at right angles to each other to tit the inner or rear edges at of the plow-point 2, which is approximately rectangular, as shown, to provide tapered inner and outer portions. The inner tapered portion of the plow-point fits snugly within the recess of the plowshare, and the inner or rear edges abut against the edges of the recess, the upper or outer face of the plow-point being arranged flush with the outer face of the plow share and forming a continuation of the same. The plowshare is provided at opposite sides of the center of the recess with forwardlyprojecting supporting-flanges 5, which are bent downwardly at their inner portions to offset their outer or supporting portions from the plane of the lower face of the plowshare to permit the plow-point to lie in the same plane as the adjacent portions of the plowshare. The plow-point is provided at its inner end with a shank or tang 6, extending inward and upward on the lower face of the plowshare, and provided with a slot 7, through which passes a bolt 8 for securing the plow-point to the plowshare. The shank or tang of the plow-point is arranged between the supporting-flanges of the plowshare, and the plow-point is also provided at the outer side edges of the supporting-flanges 5 with projecting lugs 9. These lugs 9, which engage the lower face of the plowshare, are bent downwardly at the rear edges of the plow-point to offset their outer portions from the plane of the plowshare to enable them to fit snugly against the lower face of the same. The plow-point is securelyinterlocked with the plowshare by means of the supportingflanges, the projecting lugs, and the shank or tang, and it may be readily detached by removing the bolt 8 when it is necessary to renew it. In this manner the plow-point may be readily renewed at a little expense and without the assistance of a skilled mechanic. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a plowshare having a recess or cut-away portion and provided at opposite sides of the same with projectingsupporting-flanges, and a plow-point fitting within the recess or cut-away portion and completing the plowshare and supported in the same plane as the said plowshare and provided between the flanges with a projecting shank detachably secured to the plowshare, said plow-point being also provided with lugs engaging the flanges and forming with the same an interlocking connection between the plow-point and the plowshare.
2. The combination of a plowshare provided with a recess or cut-away portion and having projecting supporting-flanges at opposite sides thereof, and a plow-point fitting within the recess or cut-away portion and supported by the flanges and provided between the same with a shank detachably secured to the plowshare, said plow-point being also provided beyond the supporting-flanges with projecting lugs fitting against the outer side edges of the flanges and engaging the plowshare, the shank, lugs and flanges forming an interlocking connection between the plow-point and the plowshare.
3. The combination of aplowshare provided with a central tapering recess or cut-away portion and having projecting supporting-flanges at opposite sides thereof, and a plow-point having a tapered inner portion fitting within the recess or cut-away portion and provided at a point between the said flanges with a projecting shank detachably secured to the plowshare, said plow-point being also provided with projecting lugs arranged beyond and fitting against the outer side edges of the supporting-flanges and engaging the lower face of the plowshare, the shank, lugs and flanges forming an interlocking connection between the plow-point and the plowshare.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
"ALTER H. HUXFORD.
