UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
JOHN J. MCMANMON, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
COTTON-SWEEP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 710,600, dated October '7, 1902.
Application filed April 24, 1902.
To all 2072,0721, it ntrty concern:
Be it known that LJOHN J. MCMANMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Cotton-Sweep, of which the following isa specification.
This invention is an improved construction of cotton-sweep or heel-sweep for plows, the object being to provide a simple and efficient construction of sweep whereby the operation of cultivating the cotton-plants can be carried on more easily than with the cotton-sweeps now in use; and with this object in View the invention consists in the novel features of construction, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a cotton-sweep constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of a sweep constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a slightly-modified form. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing a still further modification.
In carrying out my invention I employ a single piece of steel which is bent centrally, as shown at A, providing wings B, and the central portion has a hole A and a notch A whereby the sweep can be connected by suitable bolts to the plow stock or standard. The steel blank is preferably wedge shape in Serial No. 104,466. (No model.)
cross-section, terminating in a sharp edge 0 at the lower end and being broadest at the upper end D, the taper of the said plate being the same upon both sides, so that, if desired, the sweep may be reversed by forging in case such reversal should become necessary or desirable. In Fig. 3 I have shown the front face E as straight, while the rear face F is curved for the lower half and straight during the upper half, and in Fig. 4 the front face is straight, while the rear face Gr is curved from the center in both directions and terminating in sharp edges II.
A sweep constructed in this manner is cheaper and simpler than those now in common use and will also accomplish the objects of cultivation much easier.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cotton-sweep comprising a single piece of metal having a central straight front face having an aperture formed therein and cut out on the upper edge above said aperture, and rearwardly and outwardly extending side members having straight outer faces and having their rear faces beveled to a cutting edge, substantially as described.
