PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,525, dated November 26, 1895. Application filed May 23,1895. Seria1No.550,380. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY OLDENDORPH, of Belleville, county of St. Clair, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the form of plows shown in my two patents, No. 528,107, dated October 23, 1894, and No. 537,352, dated April 9, 1895.
This present invention relates to an. improved nose and point to the plowshare and the manner of securing the cutting-edge in said point, hereinafter specifically pointed out and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure I is a top view of the landside and share of the plow and shows the removable point to which my present invention relates. Fig. II is a bottom View of the same. Fig. III is a side section taken on the line III III of Fig. I. Fig. IV is a section taken on the line IV IV of Fig. I. Fig.Vis a detail perspectiveview of the nose of the plow. Fig. V1 is another perspective of the same with the point removed. Fig. VII is a detail perspective of the removable point. Fig. VIII is a crosssection of the said removable point through the line VIII VIII of Fig. I. Fig. IX is a view of the key inverted.
1 represents the landside of my plow.
2 is the share, and 3 is a removable point thereto. The share 2 is provided with a selfsharpening plate 4, held in position by a clamp plate 5, having an arm 6 attached thereto.
7 is a brace-bar.
8 is a bolt, which engages in a slot 9 of the arm 6 and by which the plate 4 is secured to the share 2.
The front of the share terminates in a blunt end and is formed with a socket 10, which has straight edges on the landside and bottom, but which is zigzag or V-shaped on the share side. This prevents lateral or other movement of the point 3, which is adapted to fit in the said socket 10.
This socket is somewhat tapering, being smallest at its inner end,
and the point 3 is made to correspond there with, so that when the said point is inserted in the socket the tendency is to tighten the same. This point 3 has cut out on its under side a dovetail recess.
11 is a plate having an upturned inner end 13, adapted to fit into notches 14 011 the under side of point 3.
12 is a dovetail key adapted to fit the recess in 3 and lock the plate 11 securely in position.
The end of plate 11 extends somewhat beyond the front of the point 3 and forms a cutting-edge, and is prevented from moving backward by the up turned end thereof fitting into one of the notches 14. As the cuttingedge is worn away the point is removed from the plow, the key 12 taken out, and the plate 11 moved forward a distance of one or more notches 14. The point is again inserted in the socket and the parts are again ready for use.
This construction provides for the removal of all that portion of the plow which extends beyond the line of the edge 4, and hence affords an easy means of repairing the only parts that are liable to break. My former construction of providing a floor or bottom extending well forward beneath the removable point 3 rendered said floor or bottom liable to be broken, a danger avoided by my present device.
I claim as my invention- 1. A plow comprising a share, having a blunt end formed with a socket which has straight edges on the land-side and bottom and which is zigzag or V-shaped on the share side and the point fitting in the socket and against the blunt end of the share; substantially as described.
2. A plow comprising a share having its forward end formed with a socket, the point formed with a dovetail recess, the adjustable plate having a cutting edge extending through the recess in the point, and a dovetail key whereby the plate is secured in the recess; substantially as described.
3. A plow comprising a share having its forward end formed with a socket, the point plate is secured in the recess; substantially formed with a dovetail recess and with a seas described.
'ries of notches on the under side of its inner end, the adjustable plate having an upturned HENRY OLDENDORPH inner end adapted to engage the notches and In presence of-- a cutting edge extending through the recess HENRY J. FINK,
in the point, and a dovetail key whereby the 1 E. V. WEST, J r.
