HAND MANURE-SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 191%.
Application filed July 3, 1916. Serial No. 107,433.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIS HELLER and ELo Nnnsn, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Round Top, in the county of Fayette and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Manure-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a hand manure scraper and has for its principal object the production of a device of this nature which is provided with a handle which extends at approximately 45 degrees to the body portion of the scraper.
Another object of this invention is in the production of a shank which may be struck from a blank sheet of metal.
A still further object of this invention is in the production of rivets, the body por tions of which are substantially elliptical in cross section.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings: I
Figure 1 is a detailed perspective view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of the device.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the device.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary bottom plan View of the device.
' Fig. 5 is a plan view of the shank adapt ed to be used in connection with this device.
By referring to the drawing by numerals, it will be seen that 1 designates the body portion of the scraper which is provided with a sharpened edge 2, and around three sides of this body portion 1 is the flange 3.
The scraper is provided with the handle 1 which extends at approximately 45 de grees from the body portion 1 of the scraper as is shown in Fig. 3. This handle 4 is attached to the body 1 of the scraper by means of the shank 5. By referring to Fig. 5, it will be seen that this shank is adapted to be struck from a sheet of metal so as to form the blank comprising a sleeve portion 6 which is rectangular in shape and is provided with the neck 7. Extending from this neck 7 is the yoke 8 which is provided with the arms 9 which extend parallel to the edge IQ of the sleeve and are provided with the diverglngly extending fingers 11. The sleeve portion 6 of the shank 5 is adapted to be rolled so as to form a sleeve which will receive the handle 4 while the yoke portion 8 is adapted to be bent around the flange 3 so as to allow the diverging fingers 11 to rest upon the bottom portion of the scraper 1 as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The fingers 11 are fixedly secured to the bottom portion of the scraper by means of the rivets 12 and by referring to Fig. 4:, it will be noted that these rivets are of sub stantially elliptical shape in cross section and are adapted to fit snugly in the elliptical openings 13 provided in the fingers 11. From this construction it will be noticed that the fingers will not be weakened as much as if the ordinary round rivets were used since the marginal space is necessarily greater.
From the above description, it will be seen that a simple and efficient scraper has been produced whereby the operator may grasp the handle 4 and walk along dragging the device behind him which will efficiently scrape up manure or other dirt without any necessity of the operator bending his back or otherwise placing himself in an inconvenient position as is necessary with the ordinary shovel.
It will also be noted that a shank has been provided that may be cheaply manufactured because of the fact that the blank for same may be stamped out of a sheet of metal and it should also be noticed that this shank may be quickly attached both to the handle and to the scraper proper.
By referring to Fig. 8, it will be noted that the handle may be bent at a smaller degree than 45 degrees if the operator is a short man or the same may be bent to a greater angle in accordance with the height of the operator.
What we claim is:
1. In a device of the class described the combination of a scraper, a handle fixedly secured to said scraper and extending forwardly over said scraper at an angle of 45 degrees therefrom, a shank struck from a single sheet of metal securing said handle to said scraper, rivets fixedly securing said shank to said scraper, said rivets being substantially elliptical in cross section, whereby said shank will not be weakened because of the greater marginal space allowed.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a shank for holding a scraper to a handle,
said shank being struck from a sheet of metal so as to form a sleeve, said sleeve 1n lts blank form belng rectangular in shape,
a neck provided upon said sleeve, a yoke connected to said neck,' said yoke terminat mg 111 divergingly extendingfingers, SMCl fingers provided With a plurality of elliptical shaped openings whereby the fingers may be fixedly secured to the bottom portion of a shovel and the yoke bent around LoUIs HELLER.
