Specification of Letters Patent.
sHovEL.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application filed March 25. 1907. Serial No. 364.259.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. BAUM, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of l/Vaterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, haveinventcd certain new and useful Improvements in Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in scoop-shovels, and the object of my improvement is to provide a detachable blade for the front part of the shovel, arranged so that a worn blade may be readil removed from the shank-piece when broken or worn out, and another blade quickly and easily substituted therefor. This object I have e'llected by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the detachable shovel-blade showing its form as first shaped y the die; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the dentils bent down to a right angle with the body of the blade Fig. 3 isa plan view of the shank-piece of my improved shovel, showing the apertures therein for the reception ol the dentils on the blade; Fig. l is a plan view (lower side) of the complete shovel with the blade secured to the shank-piece, and Fig. 5 is a plan view (upper side) of the complete shovel, showing the manner in which the dentils are secured upon the face of the shank-piece.
Similar letters refer to throughout the several views.
The scoop part of my improved shovel is formed of two members, a shank-piece f of the usual form, and a detaclnble blade at, adapted to be secured to and overlapping the lower side of said shank-piece.
The blade at has at one end projecting tongues b-b which are adapted to cover the cheeks of the shank-piece on the bottom to protect same from wear. The same end of said blade has small projecting dentils ce on each side of the tongues bl), and said tongues b-b are also furnished at their ends with dentils e. A short distance to the front similar parts oi" the outer dentils c, U-shaped openings are cut in a so as to form rearwardly'projecting dentils (I. The sides of a are bent so as to conform to the slant ol" the scoop and the dentils are bent upward at right angles so as to be ready for insertion into the slots 9 ol the shank-piece f. The slots 9 are properly located in said shank-piece so as to re ister with the said dentils in position, and the parts a andf are secured together by simply inserting the dentils into the registering slots, and then bending or hammering said dentils back upon the upper surface of f, as shown in Fig. 5. hen thus secured the dentils (Z prevent displacement of the blade a upward and the other dentils prevent its displacement downward.
It is obvious that the scope of my invention will include detachable blades secured in a similar manner to other forms of shovels or analogous tools.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A shovel having a shank-piece provided with a detachable blade, said blade having projections, and said shank-piece having slots, said projections registering with and being secured within said slots.
2. A shovel having a shank-piece provided with a detachable blade,.said blade having projections, and said shank-piece having slots for the reception of said projections, said projections then being secured to said shank-piece to prevent displacement of said blade in any direction.
3. A shovel having a shank-piece, and a detachable blade having projecting tongues covering the parts of the under side of the shank-piece most exposed to wear, and means for detachably securing said blade to said shank-piece.
Signed at aterloo, Iowa, this 5th L day of M011. 1907.
ALBERT E. BAUM.
