UNITED STATES JAMES T. TAYLOR, OF NORMANGEE, TEXAS.
BROOM.
Application filed February 14, 1919.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, .latins T. TAYLOR, a citizen er the United States, residino' at Normangee, in the county of Leon and @tate ot Texas, have invented new and useful improvements in Brooms, ot which the tollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to brooms and particularly to a broom head attachment, and
one object ot the same is to provide means for securing a broom to a handle in such manner that the broom straw, liber or other strand material, when worn, may be replaced or renewed by substantially similar straw, or strand material with facility and convenience and thereby materially reduce the cost of brooms and at the same time produce a strong and relatively durable broom structure.
`With these and other advantages in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement ot the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in preferred form.
ln the drawing* Figure 1 is an elevation of a broom with the attachment applied and broken away and shown in section in part and embodying the features of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on line2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 1.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail perspective views ot parts of the improved attachment shown separated.

straw or other material in a manner which will alter expense. All the parts of the at tachment are constructed of sheet metal struck up in the shape specified and as light as possible consistent with the requisite strength and durability required to provide for an effective attachment for holding1 broom material with such rigidity as to resist breakage under the usual stress imposed upon a broom during sweeping and scrubbmg operations. The member or box section 6 has a tubular socket l0 rising from the center of the head flange 8 thereof to receive ythe handle 5 which is secured therein and both members G and 7 have reinforcing metal strips or straps 11 and 12 applied over the outer sides thereof close to the lower wider edges, said straps being bent over a portion oit the side anges 9 as at 13. These strips or straps 11 and 12 are lirmly secured to the members or sections 6 and 7 and are used to strengthen the members at the points where they are applied against bending or distortion of the said members at the parts where the greatest clamping action is ei'l'ected relatively to the broom material. The strips or straps 11 and '12 are also provided as a positive supporting means for nutted securing bolts la which are inserted through openings 15 formed at intervals through the strips or straps 11 and 12 and the adjacent wider portions ot' the members or bor; sections G and 7, the bolts 14: eXtending across from one section to the other with their heads 16 bearing against one strip or strap `and the nuts 17 thereof against the other strip or strap as clearly shown by Figs. 2 and 3.' The tubular socket 10 and the handle 5 are reinforced by a removahle brace 18 intermediately bent lor struck out as at 19 to provide a tongue 20 which tits over the upper end portion of the member or section 7, this brace having openings 21 and 22 respectively Jformed in the upper end and the tongue 2O thereof. The part of the brace 1S above the tongue 20 is given a convex-concave form in cross section so that it will snugly lit against the tubular socket 10, and the latter has opposite alined openings 23 formed therein to receive a securing bolt and nut 24: which is inserted through the opening 21 of the brace, and through the said openings 23; and Vin the upper central or head portions of the members or sections 6 and 7 openings 25 are termed with which the opening 22 et the brace is adapted to register to receive a nutted securing bolt 26,` the latter bolt also acting to firmly unite and hold the upper portions of the members or sections in associated relation. lWhen the brace 18 is applied it will be seen that it resists bending or breakage of the tubular socket 10 and also strengthens the upper portions of the mem bers or sections 6 and 7.
The Vmembers or sections 6 and 7 and the brace 18 may be readily separated by detaching' the bolts 15,26 and 2d, and the broom straw, liber or other strand material is gathered in close or contracted relation and forced into place in the member or section 6 in such full quantity that the body of the broom will be ample for the purposes of sweeping or scrubbing or will be equal to the fullness of an ordinary broom. After the broom material has been applied to the member or section 6 the member or section 7 is applied thereover and forced into the said member of section 6, and the bolts 1li insorted through the openings 15. and secured, and finally the brace 18 is applied and secured by the bolts 24: and v26. llVhen the members 6 and 7 are secured at their lower wider ends against the broom material they will set up a clamping action on the latter, the degree of such action depending upon the tightening of the bolts 1drthrough their nuts 17, and it will be understood that the bolts 14C are inserted between the fibers of the means the improved attachment may be repeatedly used in positively holding or supporting broom material. The reduction of 'the side flanges 9 of the members 6 and 7 permit a closer movement of the lower wider portions of the members toward each other during the clamping action set up by the bolts 14rthan would be permitted if said flanges were of equal width throughoutk said handle should become broken at anyv time it may be readily replaced without impairing the remaining' parts of the improved attachment. l
`What is claimed as new is- ,A broom attachment of the class speciiied, consisting of two box-like clamping members both flaring from their upper ends and both having angular side flanges tapering` toward the lower ends of the members, the one member being materially smaller than the other and loosely and detachably fitted therein, the tapering side flanges permitting` avmaXimum clamping drawing action at the lower extremities of the members, one of said clamping members being provided with upwardly projecting handle-engaging means, fastening devices extending transversely through the lower diverged extremities of the members close to the lower edges of the latter and adapted to extend through the broom to which the members are applied, and a single fastening removably inserted through the centers of the upper portions of the members, the clamping contraction of the members being effected to a maximum extent at their lower extremities.
ln testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. h.
