FRANCIS G. MASON, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR ATTACHING HANDLES TO CARPET-SWEEPER BAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 659,084, dated October 2, 1900.
Application filed June 20,1900. Serial No. 20,012- (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS C. MASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful- Improvements in Devices for Attaching Handles to Carpet-Sweeper Bails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful device for connecting handles to the bails of carpet-sweepers and other analogous purposes; and the invention consists in combining with the ferrule of a screw an attachingplate, as hereinafter described.
The objects of the invention are, first, to,
furnish a cheap and efficient means for attaching handles to the bails of carpet-sweepers, and, second, to form an attachment which will securely retain the handle in the ferrule and which will also allow the handle to be readily removed and replaced. These objects I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 shows an elevation of a handle attached to the bail of a carpet-sweeper. Fig. 2 shows a vertical sectional view through the central portion of the ferrule and through the bail. Fig. 3 shows a vertical sectional view through the center of the ferrule, taken at right angles to the center line of the bail. Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the protecting-plate and screw, andFig. 5 shows an inverted plan view of the ferrule-attaching device.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the handle of a carpet-sweeper.
B represents the bail of a carpet-sweeper or a portion thereof.
B represents the ferrule. The ferrule is provided with openings extending through from end to end, the opening at the upper end being somewhat larger than the opening at the lower end, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. At the bottom of the ferrule are two or more slots, (shown by H H in Fig. 5.)
D represents an attachingplate, which plate is provided with lugs C and O, fitted into the grooves H H, and the adjoining edges of the ferrule are riveted or bound down, so as to securely attach the plate D to the bottom of the ferrule. The plate D is provided with a screw E. This screw E preferably passes through the center of the plate D and is secured thereto in any suitable manner. It may be provided with the neck F, as shown in Fig. or it may be made integral with the plate D.
By the construction above described in case of a carpet-sweeper the ferrule B and the bail B are usually made of malleable iron, and the ferrule can be milled out smoothly from end to end, so that the handle will fit closely and snugly therein. The attachingplate D, with the screw E, is then applied in the manner above described. The plate D is preferably made of sheet metal struck up in dies to fit the lower end of the ferrule, as above described.
This construction is very cheap and efficient, prevents the handle from having any movement in the ferrule, and yet allows the handle to be very readily removed. The handle, being provided with a hole in its lower end, is placed Within the ferrule, and by revolving the handle it engages with the screw E and is drawn down closely and securely into the ferrule, thereby attaching said handle to the bail of the carpet-sweeper.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the ferrule B provided with slots at its lower end, the attaching-plate D provided with lugs engaging said slots and secured therein, and the screw E, all constructed as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- FRANCIS C. MASON.
