Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. KULP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented acertain new and useful Impovement in Casket-Handles, of which the following is a speciiication.

Myinvention relates to a new and useful improvement in casket-handles, and has for its object to provide a removable casket-handle which can be easily and readily attached to or detached from the casket, and the means for attaching the same will be such that it cannot become accidentally detached while carrying the casket, and by the formation of the handle and the means of attaching it said handle will be held a sufficient distance from the side of the casket to allow the same to be carried with convenience.

With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a cross-sectional view through one corner of a casket,showing one of my han dles applied thereto and Fig. 2, a perspective view of one of the clips which will be secured to the bottom of the casket and a portion of the two ends of the handle adapted to iit within the clips.

In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the casket, in the bottom of which are adapted to be secured the clips C. These clips consist of a plate bent so as to form the two depressed portions D, and the clips are adapted to be secured to the bottom of the casket by means of the screws passing through the holes E into the bottom of the casket.

F is the handle, which is composed of the cross-piece G, which furnishes the hand-grip, and the two side pieces H, which are secured to the end of the cross-piece G and extend downward vand bent in the manner shown in Fig. 1, the lower part of the side pieces H being bent so as to lie horizontally when the handle is in position. The free ends of the pieces H are bent back upon themselves, so as to form a hook, as indicated at I. When the clips C are secured to the bottom of the casket, the depressed portions D will form clips into which the hook I upon the ends of the side pieces H can be inserted from the rear. Thus the handles will be secured to the casket, but can be easily removed when desired.

The advantage of my invention is that the handles, if need be, can be manufactured very cheaply and although simple of construction will be very durable. The side strips are' composed of iiat material and have their ends bent so as to form Hat hooks, which will fit in clips having openings of the same siz'e as the strip will be in cross-section, and the hooked part of the strips being inserted from the rear will contact with the clips both above and below the same and thus forma very strong connection between the handle and the clips, and the handle being bent to the proper shape will be always held in position for con veniently lifting the casket.

I have shown the handle in its simplest form, with no ornamentation whatever; but of course slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of my in vent-ion.` Therefore I do not wish to be con-l fined to the exact construction here shown.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is In a device of the character described, a clip adapted to be secured against the bottom of the casket, two sockets formed in each clip, handles composed of a hand-grip, side strips secured to each end of the hand-grip and eX- tending downward and bent so that the lower end will lie horizontally when the handles are in position, hooks formed by bending this horizontal portion back upon itself, said hooked portion adapted to slide within the socket in the clips from the rear of said clips, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
