SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,362, dated August 6, 1889. Application filed March 19, 1889. Serial No. 303,888. (No mddel.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JUDGE B. STORY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Olothes-Driers, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in clothesdriers; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a clothes-drier embodying my inven tion. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the wallplate. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the socket-plate. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the inner end of one of the dryingarms to show the swiveled loop or keeper; Fig. 6 is a detail View to show the connection between the socket-plate and the wall-plate.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the wall-plate, which is adapted to be secured to the wall or other support by means of screws a a, and B designates a horizontal arc-shaped socket-plate, which is provided at its free ends with the upstanding ears or lugs l) l), which engage slots C C in the wall-plate. The wall-plate is provided at its ends with the horizontal detents D D, which project under the socket-plate and hold the same in the desired position.

The socket-plate is provided with a series of peripheral curved horizontal sockets E E, at the lower sides of which are formed the rests F F, on which the inner ends of the dryingarms G G bear when in the operative position in the sockets, and the socket-plate is further provided with an inward-extending flange H, against which the extremities of the dryingarnis (beyond the said rests) bear to prevent the outer ends of the arms from sagging.

The rests are preferably formed very narrow, it being only necessary to provide surfaces on which the drying-arms may bear,

and to prevent the drying-arms from becoming detached from the socket-plate when removed from the sockets I provide them with the extended loops or keepers K K, which are engaged with the rests and slide thereon when the drying-arms are moved longitudinally to engage their inner ends in the sockets. The centers of the rests are reduced to form the necks L L, in which the loops or keepers K K fit to always hold the inner ends of the drying-arms in alignment with their respective sockets.

In order to enable the loops or keepers to be engaged with the rests at the lower sides of the sockets, they are formed in the following manner: One side of the loop or keeper is extended through the arm and provided at its upper end with a head 70', which bears on the upper side of the arm and thereby enables the other side of the loop or keeper to be swung out laterally (as shown in Fig. 5) to enable it to be engaged with the rest. The free end of the loop or keeper preferably fits in a shallow socket or depression k in the under surface of the arm to hold it in position. These loops or keepers may be formed of wrought nails, which are driven through the arms and bent to form the loops.

' Having thus described the invention, I claim- 1. In a clothes-drier, the combination, with a wall-plate provided with the slots 0 O and the detents D D, arranged below the slots, of the aroshaped socket-plate provided at its free ends with ears or lugs which engage the slots 0 C, so that the plate bears on the detents D, and the drying-arms fitting in the sockets in the socket-plate, substantially as specified.

2. In a clothes-drier, the arc-shaped socketplate provided with a series of sockets to re ceive the ends of the drying-arms, the sockets being provided at their lower sides with rests F F, having reduced portions or necks L L, and the drying-arms being provided with loops or keepers to engage the said necks to hold the ends of the arms in alignment with their respective sockets, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
