Description

H. L. JUDD. Picture Hook.
No. 201,680. Patented March-26,1878;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HUBEBT L. JUDD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,680, dated March 26, 1878; application filed January 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT L. JUDD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Picture-Hooks, of which the following is a specification:
Hooks have been made of wire and sheet metal to connect the picture wire or cord with a wooden molding or rod secured at the base of the cornice passing around the room, so that said hooks can be moved from place to place, to suit the pictures to be hung on the walls.
My invention consists in a peculiarity in the construction of the hook, whereby it is better adapted to themoldingupon which it is hooked, and to the cord or wire of the picture.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a sectionof the molding and edge View of the hook. Fig. 2 is an elevationvof the hook, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan of the hook at the line 00 w.
The hook is preferably of cast metal, such as malleable iron or brass, and it is in the form of a plate, a, with parallel or nearly parallel sides, with a cross-bar, c, or T-head at one end,
and with lugs or projections d at the back, and the ends of the cross-bar c are preferably pro vided with ornamental heads 6, and the surface of the plate is preferably ornamented with recessed orraised designs.
The general contour of this hook is S-shaped, and it is either cast or bent into this form in order that the upper end of the hook may correspond with the molding f, that is of wood or other suitable material and nailed or otherwisefastened to the wall. This hooked upper end of the picture-support may easily be bent to adapt the same to various moldings, and the lugs or projections d pass into the cove of the molding, so as to prevent the hook being pried off the molding by the action of the weight hanging upon the lower end of the picture-hook.
The cross-bar c or T end insures "the proper support for the wire or cord k, that passes to the picture, and the same cannot slip off the hook because of the projecting T ends. The ornamental knobs at the ends of this cross bar aid in retaining the picture cord or Wire, and in improving the appearance of the picturehook.
I claim as my invention- 1. The plate-hook having a cross-piece or T-head at the lower end for retaining the cord, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the plate-hook andcross-piece, of the knobs at the ends of the cross-piece, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 24th day of January, A.
H. L. J UDD.
