Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug'. 15, 1905.
Application filed March 8, 1905. Serial No. 248,968.
To (ir/ZZ wil/0111, 711'; r11/fry con/cern.-
Be it known that i, FRANK E. LEHMAN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing' at Shippensburg, in the county of Cumberland, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Picture- Hangers; and li do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for hanging' pictures, and has for its object to provide a device of this nature by means of which a picture may be hung' without fastening Wires thereto and which will be so arranged that a picture engaged therewith will be held tilted from the wall in the usual manner.
A further object is to provide a device embodying' the above features which will be simple and which may be manufactured at a low figure.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing' a picture hung' with the present invention. Fig'. 2 is a perspective view of the present invention with the picture removed therefrom. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form. Fig. i is a perspective View of the form shown in Fig'. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention is formed from a piece of wire 5, of suitable stiffness, which is bent into a loop 6 at its center. At opposite sides of the loop the Wire is bent in opposite directions and then curved to form parallel portions 7, the eX- tremities of which are bent upwardly in the direction of the oppositely-extending portions to form coinciding hooks 8. There is thus formed a llJeshaped member' including the spaced legs 7 and a connecting big'ht 10, the latter carrying' the loop 6. Adjacent to the bight 10 the legs 7 are bent to forrn loops E), and engaged with these loops are the looped ends 11 of Wires 12, the other ends of which are bent to form hooks 13, directed toward the hooks 8.
lin use a picture is disposed with its lower edge in the hooks 8, the hooks 13 being engaged over its upper edge, the Wires 12 permitting the upper portion of the picture to extend away from the member. The loop is then engaged with a suitable nail or hook to support the picture.
ln Figs. 3 and A there is shown a modified form of the invention in which the hooks 8 are provided with buttons a. upon their bills, these buttons preventing' the lower portion of the picture from slipping' from the hook, and the buttons are suitably ornamented, as will be understood.
A wire B is bent to form a member for en gagement of the upper portion of the picture,
this wire being' bent to form side portions C, which have thei r forward ends bent rearwardly to form hooks D, these hooks being connected by a portion E. The rearward ends of the members C are turned to extend toward each other, as shown at F, and these inwardly-extending' portions are engaged in the loops 9, the ends of the wire B lying' between these loops and being' secured together in anysuitable manner.
What is claimed is- 1. A device of the class described comprising spaced members having hooks at their lower ends, a connection between the members at their upper ends, said connection being adapted for engagement with a supporting' device, and members pivotall y connected with the first-named members above their lower ends, said second members having' hooks at their free ends cooperating with those of the first members.
2. A picture-hanger comprising a piece of wire bent to form spaced legs and a connecting bight, said legs having' loops adjacent to the big'ht and having their free ends bent to form hooks directed toward the bight, and hooked members each engaged at one end with the loops of the legs for pivotal movement of the members, said members having' hooks cooperating' with those of the legs, said bight being bent to form a loop intermediate of the legs.
Tn testimony whereof lf afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
