QMJZ ANNIE G. BISHOP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANGER FOR PICTURES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1916.
Application filed June 23, 1914-. Serial No. 846,820.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNIE Gr. Bisnor, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hangers for Pictures, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used for hanging pictures and like articles on the wall of the room of buildings and other supports.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a hanger of a form whereby pictures, and articles of similar character may be readily applied to a wall, or other support for display without requiring the employment of nails, hooks, wire, and like devices, and which may be advantageously used without damaging the appearance of the support.
lfhe invention consists essentially of a rigid supporting plate of substantially the shape of an inverted T, having an outturned horizontal flange at its lower edge. A prong projecting rearwardly from the upper portion of the plate is adapted to enter a wall or like support upon which the picture is to be hung, the horizontal flange serving to engage beneath the overhanging rear part of the upper rail of a picture frame and to thereby support the weight of the picture. lrongs projecting upwardly from said flange enter the material of the picture frame and resist and prevent the accidental dislodgment of the picture from the flange.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hanger for pictures of a simple and eflicient construction, and which is susceptible of being made so as to be sold at a very moderate price.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both of the views the said invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hanger embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, showing the manner of using the device for suspending a picture to a support.
The hanger comprises a flat vertical body portion 21 having an outturned horizontal flange 25 at its lower edge. Projecting rearwardly from the upper part of the body por tion 21 is a prong 30 which is sharpened at 30 to adapt it to readily enter a wall or like support 33. Projecting upwardly from the flange 25 are prongs 26 and 27 which are pointed at 28 and 29 to adapt them to enter the upper rail 32 of a picture frame.
When in use the body portion 21 lies flat against the wall 33, the prong 30 being driven into said wall, the overhanging rear portion of the upper rail 32 of the picture rests firmly upon the flange 25 and the prongs 26 and 27 enter the said rail 32 and prevent movement of the picture away from the body portion. It will, ther fore, be seen that the employment of a picture cord is rendered unnecessary because the entire weight of the picture is supported upon the flange 25. The prongs 26 and 27 maintain the picture upon the flange and obviate the possibility of vibration and jars dislodging the picture from its position on theflange.
It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the particular shape or design of hanger disclosed in the drawing but includes within its purview such changes as come within the spirit or terms of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A hanger for pictures comprising a flat vertical body portion having an outturned horizontal flange along its lower front edge, a prong projecting rearwardly from the rear face of the body portion at the upper portion thereof and upstanding prongs carried by the horizontal flange which lie substantially at right-angles to the first named prong. said first named prong serving to pierce a wall or other support and said last named prongs serving to prevent movement of a picture frame supported upon the flange, away from the body portion.
This specification signed and witnessed this twenty-second day of June, A. D. 1914.
