To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD CUTLER, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at Grosvenor Works, Moseley street, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick,

England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Holders for Photographs and the like, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention has relation to photograph and like holders and refers more particularly to the method of attaching the stands or supports to the backs 01' boards of said holders, and the invention has for its object to provide a very simple and efiicient form of pivotal connection which is readily disconnectible when so desired.

In order that this invention may be clearly understood and more readily carried into practice, I have appended hereunto a sheet of drawings, upon which Figure 1 is an elevation of the board or back of the holder showing the two hinge parts for the strut or support in posltlon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the strut or support illustrating the engaging hinge part thereon. According to the present invention the board or back A of the frame is provided with a hinge part a in the form of av wire which lies in parallel relation to the board A a short distance away therefrom, and has its extremities a turned at right angles into the said board A for retaining the hinge part in position. Provided upon the upper extremity of the stand B which supports the frame and which may be in the form of a single wooden leg or member is the other hinge part b of the connection in the form of a plate which is attached by wood screws 6 or the like to the said stand B and at its upper extremity is bent back upon itself at b in parallel relation so to form a hooked formation as illustrated. This hooked part b can then be engaged with the wire a on the back or board A of the photograph or like frame. In order to provide the necessary spring connection between the two parts 12 and a the upper extremity of the plate 6 is first looped around to a somewhat curved configuration which will exactly embrace the wire (Fig. 3) and the projecting lip or extension 6 of such circularpart is bent in parallel relation to the main attachment part of the plate 6 The width or passage between the parallel lip b and main plate 6 is however, less than the width of the wire a or the curved embracing part b of the plate. Thus it will be seen when it is desired to engage the plate 6 with the wire a on the back of the board A, the wire a. is placed or brought between the parallel lip b and its integral attachment plate 12 and said wire is traveled along the passage till same finally rests in the large curved portion a when the lip contracts and so the said wire is eiiiciently engaged. When however it is desired to disconnect the two parts (1. and b by giving the stand or support B which carries the plate a somewhat angular or rotary motion the wire is removed from out of the enlarged curved part b in a simple manner. The sheet metal plate Z) on the strut or support B may be of oblong formation having its corners rounded and may be attached at its lower extremity as aforestated by means of wood screws 6 while the upper extremity b is bent in parallel relation until the upper edge lies at a position somewhere about midway or a little above midway between the enlarged curved part b and the bottom edge of the plate Z).

The back or board A of the photograph or like holder may be provided with two or more wires a or the equivalent hinge parts arranged substantially at right angles for enabling the stand or support B to be employed in connection with any one of the hinge parts on the back according to whether it is desired to dispose the photograph holder horizontally or vertically in the case of same being of oblong formation, or having an oval mount.

According to a modification of the present invention as illustrated in Fig. 4, the parallel wire a may be employed as hereinbefore upon the back of the frame, but upon the leg or support B a different form of hinged part or plate 6 may be employed. In this arrangement an oblong or equivalently shaped plate is employed, and is attached at its lower extremity by wood screws or the like 6 on said leg B, and at some convenient position along its length is looped or curved outwardly from the face of the support at Z) to form a bearing for the wire a on the frame. In such an arrangement the sheet metal is'bent outwardly, then inwardly as aforestated to embrace the wire a and then said sheet metal 6 is bent gradually outwardly to form a spring tongue or lip b at the upper extremity of the plate N. In this arrangement it will be seen that in order to position the two parts A and B the wire a on the board or back A is passed between the spring lip b and the face of the leg support B till said wire lies within the enlarged or curved part b when said lip contracts, and retains the same.
