H. G. 'BURNARD.-
PIOTURBHA-NGER'. APPLICATION FILED MAY 24. 1907.

UNITED STATES PiCTURE-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 10, 1908.
Application filed May 24, 1907. Serial No. 375,542.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY C. BURNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tower, in the county of Cheboygan and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture- Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hangers for pictures or the like, and provides a hanger which is adjustable to accommodate pictures of various sizes, and which is adapted to support the same upon a wall.'
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear perspective view showing the device applied to the back of a pioture. Fig. 2 is a side view.
The device includes in itsconstruction a vertical metal strip 6 which has a series of tongues 7 struck up therefrom at its opposite edges. The tongues are arranged in pairs at different heights, to accommodate picture frames of different sizes, and by having two tongues, one at each edge of the strip, swaying of the picture sidewise is to some extent prevented.
8 indicates a wire which engages over the tongues 7 and is bent to form two branches which are provided at the lower ends with hooks 9 to engage under the edge of the picture frame, as shown. The wire is caught or held by the tongues 7, or it may be adjusted up or down, to engage higher or lower pairs of tongues, according to the length desired.
An arm is connected to the top of the plate 6, consisting of two strips 9* and 10, one of which is slotted as at 11 and the other of which is provided with a thumb screw 12 extending through the slot. This connection allows the length of the arm to be varied, to regulate the angle or overhang of the picture. The strip 9 has a hook 13 at the end which engages over a bar 14 at the head of the strip 6, and the other part, 10, of the arm, has a hook 14 adapted to engage over the top of the picture. The strip 6 has an opening 15 at the top to receive a nail whereby it may be hung upon the wall, or to receive a picture hook whereby it may be hung from the molding.
The device can be attached to picture frameswithout the use of any screw eyes or other fixtures inserted in the frame, and is particularly useful in connection with small and delicate frames which are frequently split by screw eyes inserted therein. Furt ermore, by adjusting the length of the arm at the. top the angle of the picture can be varied and quickly set by tightening the thumb screw, thus avoiding the lengthening or shortening of wire, as commonly done.
I claim:
A picture hanger comprising a vertical strip having a series of tongues projecting therefrom atdifferent heights, a wire engaging over said tongues and having depending arms with hooks at the lower end, and an extensible hooked arm projecting outwardly from the upper end of t 1e strip.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY BURNARD.
