HARRY H. SHEPARD AND HARRY SHEPARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FRAME-HANGER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY II. SHEPARD and HARRY SHEPARD, citizens of the United States, and each a resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frame- Hangers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to means for suspending and holding picture frames, mirrors or similar articles employed as wall ornaments.
The primary object of the invention is to provide simple and etficient means whereby a picture frame or other article may be properly suspended and held at the desired angle from the usual molding or other supporting means located on the wall, and which means is so constructed that it may be easily placed in position and cheaply made and adapted for various shapes and sizes of frames containing pictures or other ornaments, thereby overcoming the objection incident to the use of the ordinary wire requiring a separate hanging element which requires a ladder or other means for placing the same in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and ornamental device which may be adjustable to adapt the article to be suspended and held at the desired height, and to provide a device which may be readily held in position on the wall and to the article to be suspended.
IVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of device embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail fragmentary view, partly in section and partly in elevation, of a sectional suspending element. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a device which may be attached to the back of one of the frames. Fig. t shows a somewhat different form of suspending element in which two members are adjustably held together. Fig. 5 shows how the end of the suspending element may be arranged to be placed over a nail or other projection instead of on the molding as shown in Fig. 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 10, 1908.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Serial No. 461,953.
Fig. 6 shows another form of means for suspending the frame or article. Fig. 7 shows the hook or element for holding the frame at the upper part thereof at the desired angle. Fig. 8 shows another form of suspending element for holding the frame; and Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of a device which may be attached to the frame to suspend the same without placing the bottom of the frame onto the lower part of the suspending element.
The wall 10 may have the usual molding 11 at the upper part thereof and fitting about said molding is a hooked end 12 of a suspending element 13. This element or suspending rod may comprise a plurality of sections or members 14, one end of which is provided with a threaded socket in which is adapted to fit a threaded stem 15 of the adjacent section or member. This element 13 may have a part 16 at or near the lower end thereof to hold the same a proper distance from the wall, and its lower end is extended at 17 to provide an angular portion on which is adapted to rest the frame of a picture or other article 18. A hook element 19 having an eye 20 at one end is slidingly held on the suspending rod or element 18 to adapt the same to be moved vertically thereon, and the outer end of said element 19 is provided with a hook portion 21 which is adapted to fit into an eye 22 in a device 23 by which the frame or article may be held at the proper angle. The device 23 may be provided with a collar portion 24E from which projects a threaded stem 25 which is adapted to fit in the frame. By making the suspending element 13 in sections, the picture or article to be suspended may be elevated to the desired height by the removal of one or more of the sections or the insertion of others as desired.
In Fig. 4 the suspending element 26 comprises two members 27 and 28 and may be made of light material to suspend and hold frames of a light construction, though of course said device may be made strong enough to hold various kinds of frames. As shown the member 28 is in the form of a bar and is provided with a projecting part 29 to hold the same the proper distance from the wall, and at the lower end of the member 28 is a hooked part 30 on which the frame or article is supported, and in said member 28 and extending lengthwise thereof is a groove or channel portion 31 so as to make said member 28 substantially U- shaped in cross section. The member 27 is somewhat narrower than the member 28 and is adapted to fit in the groove or channel at its lower end, and its upper end is provided with a hooked portion 32 to fit over the molding and is adapted to be slidingly held to the member 28 so that said element may be adjusted to difierent lengths. There may be slots to effect this adjustment and for holding the members together a series of apertures 33 may be provided in each member lengthwise thereof through which may pass a bolt 3% on which is arranged a thumb or other nut 35 to hold the members properly together.
Fig. 5 differs from Fig. 1 mainly in having an eye 36 instead of the hook portion 12 and by which the suspending element may be held to a nail or other projecting part on the wall.
The device shown in Fig. 6 has a main supporting rod or member 37 which may be of any desired shape and is adapted to be held to any suitable support, and adjustably held to this member 37 is a horseshoe or substantially U-shaped member 38. This member 38 may have hook portions 39 at the lower end thereof and a part 40 which is adapted to fit over the member 37 to move lengthwise thereof' The member 37 is provided with series of apertures a1 and carried by the member 38 and in the part- 40 is a bolt or other engaging part 42 by which the element 38 may be adjusted lengthwise of the member 37 to support the article at different heights.
Fig. 7 shows a hook element for holding the frame or article at the desired angle and is made of detachable sections as and 4.3, one of which has ahook portion to engage a part of the frame and the other an eye portion &5 to engage the suspending element. This permits different sizes of sections to be used and serves to hold the frame at different angles with respect to the suspending element.
In Fig. 8 the supporting element 45 has its lower end 46 detachably connected to the section 47 and is provided with a hook portion 48 for the picture frame or article.
In Fig. 9 is shown a device 49 to be attached to the frame so that a hook such as shown in F ig. 8 or other part may engage the same instead of having the frame supported and suspended as in the other figures. In this case there may be one or more of the devices 49, and said devices may consist of a body portion 50 with apertures 51 serving as securing means, and with a curved engaging part 52 to be engaged by the suspending ele ment.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple and efficient device is provided whereby frames, ornaments or other articles may be quickly and readily supported from the molding on the wall or other support in such a way as to dispense with the usual method of hanging the frames by wires; that said device may be made ornamental and attractive in appearance and of sufficient strength and size to hold various sizes of frames and articles, and that simple means is provided whereby the article may be adjusted to different heights or supported at different angles.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A frame hanger consisting of a plurality of rods removably secured to each other, one of said rods terminating in a curved ofi-set portion, another of said rods being provided with a projection adapted to engage the wall when the device is in position, said rod terminating in an L-shaped member, the inner surface of which is beveled, said L-shaped member being adapted to support a frame, a hook member adjustable upon the rod sections, said hook member consisting of an eye embracing said rod and a hook removably secured to said eye, said hook being adapted to engage an attaching device secured to said frame.
This specification signed and witnessed this 9th day of November A. D. 1908.
