UNTTED STATES Patented December 27, 1904.
PATENT Grrrcs.
HANGING-SHELF BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 778,719, dated December 27, 1904.
Application filed r ry 15, 1904. Serial No. 193,514.
To all YU7LO7IL it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. STEPHENSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hanging-Shelf Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hanging-shelf brackets, and has particularly for its object to provide a bracket for supporting a shelf in proximity to the picturemolding along the wall of a room, the bracket itself being removably supported by said picture-molding.
A further object is to provide a bracket of the above character which will be very simple and strong.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in transverse section a wall, a shelf. and in side view one of my improved brackets in position for supporting the shelf, the bracket being hung upon the picturei'nolding. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the bracket and a portion of the shelf. Fig. 3 is a front view of the bracket and a portion of the shelf, and Fig. i is a top plan view of the bracket.
The wall is represented in the accompanying drawings by l and the picture-molding thereon by 2. I
The shelf is denoted by S and is herein shown as provided with the usual longitudinal grooves& for receiving the lower edges of plates, cards, and the like. This shelf may further be provided with a front longitudinal rib 5 for preventing the articles from slipping off the shelf when resting thereupon.
My improved shelf-supporting bracket is constructed as follows: The vertical base of the bracketis denoted by 6, which base is provided at its top with a hook 7 for engaging the picture-molding At the bottom of the base I provide a hook 8 for the attachment of a picture-suspending wire or cord 9. A horizontal arm 10 projects outwardly from the base 6, and a diagonal arm 11, in the present instance of curved form, extends from the outer end of the horizontal arm 10 downwardly to the base at a point considerably below the point where the inner end of tlie horizontal arm is attached to the base. A lug 12 'uprises from the outer ends of the arms 10 and 11 for retaining the shelf 8 against lateral movement on its supporting-arm 10.
If so desired, the shelf may be locked against longitudinal movement by providing a fastening-sorew 13, which passes through ahole let in the horizontal arm 10 into engagement with the shelf.
This bracket may be made from a single strip of sheet metal, as shown in the accompanying drawings, the metal being bent back upon itself to form the lower hook 8 and the lug 12, arivet 15 being provided for securing the inner end of the shelf-supporting arm 10 to the base 6.
By using the brackets above described I am enabled to removably support a shelf from the picture-molding, thus obviating the necessity of'mutilating the walls of a room and at the same time permitting the ready removal,
of the shelf from the wall when so desired.
It will be seen that these hanging-shelf brackets may also serve as suspending devices for pictures.
hat I claim isl. A shelf-supporting bracket comprising a single strip of sheet metal, bent to form a base, an upper hook, a lower hook, a horizontal shelf-supporting arm and a diagonal bracingarm.
2. A shelf-supporting bracket comprising a single strip of sheet metal bent to form a base, a hook at the upper end of the base shaped to removably engage a picture-molding, a hook at the lower end of the base fitted to engage a picture 'wire or cord and a horizontal shelfsupporting arm.
3. A shelf-supporting bracket comprising a single strip of sheet metal bent to form a base, an upper hook, a lower hook, a horizontal shelf-supportingarm, a lug thereon and a diagonal bracing-arm.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention 1 have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of February, 190st.
EDlVARD M. STEPHENSON.
