Description

J. J. DELISO Aug. 24, 1965 ADJUSTABLE RACK OF THE APERTURED PANEL TYPE Filed May 25, 1964 OOO OOIOOOOOOOOO I V a? i! ill 1956,74; 07in J De Zz 6'0 United States Patent Filed May 25, 1964, Ser. No. 369,910 2 Claims. .(CL 21187) This invention relates to an adjustable rack of the apertured panel type which comprises several different removable and mutually adjustable parts, and the principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a rack of this type which can be placed where desired and substantially in any arrangement desired, rather than putting up the usual 4x4 or 4x8 foot apertured panel, or going to the necessity of sawing these boards up into the sizes and shapes desired.
The invention comprises a main supporting member made of extruded or pressed metal or other suitable material and having means for fastening the same to a support such as a wall in horizontal condition thereon and forming the main or basis support for the rack. This member may or may not have apertures therethrough for the acceptance of the usual apertured panel hooks. The other parts of the rack comprise a series of depending apertured panel elements which are slidably mounted on the horizontal supporting member, the depending members being slidable horizontally along the same and are positionable where desired. These depending parts can be secured to the wall or not as may be found to be convenient. All of the members are relatively elongated but may be of any length desired so that practically any shape, form, or outlining framework may be provided.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. 1 is a view in front elevation illustrating the invention;
FIG. 2 is a view in side elevation thereof showing the same mounted upon a wall;
FIG. 3 is an end view of the depending rack member looking in the direction of arrow 3 in FIG. 1, and
FIG. 4 is a diagrammatic view illustrating arrangements of the rack.
In illustrating the invention, there is first provided a relatively elongated extruded or pressed member generally indicated by the reference numeral 10. As shown in FIG. 2, this member has a longitudinal edge flange at 12 which is apertured for the reception of fasteners such as 14 securing the same in horizontal condition on a wall or other support. Then there is a right angle flange 16 which extends out from the wall to space the main body portion 18 of the member 10 from the wall. The main body portion 18 may be provided with holes for the reception of the usual pegs or hooks as desired but it also may be made solid or uninterrupted for the application thereto of information, indicia, or advertising material as may be desired.
Along the opposite edge of the main body portion 18 there is an inturned flange 20 similar to that at 16. This flange is however bent in upon itself in a reverse direction at 22 abutting the wall. This flange does not extend to the plane of the portion 18 but is bent downwardly as at 24 in a vertical direction intermediate the bend 22 and the front body portion 18. This flange terminates in an upwardly extending bent lip 26 which is spaced from the portion 24 providing a hook-like support which is continuous from end to end of the member 10. It is to be understood that the member 10 may be as long or as short as desired and it may be arranged in multiples as shown in FIG. 4.
3,202,292 Patented Aug. 24, 1965 The other parts of the rack comprise depending mernbers generally indicated by the reference numeral 28. Each of these members is adapted to depend from the lip 26 and is provided with an inturned lip 30 reversely bent at 32 and then extending downwardly at 34 and having attached to it the main body portion 36 of the supporting member 28. i
This main body portion may be formed integrally with the member 34 and it may be welded or otherwise secured thereto but in any event it includes a fiat main central portion 36 having two side flanges 40 thereon. The side flanges 40 terminate in outwardly directed flanges 42, 42 which are apertured for the reception of fasteners such as those at 44 or the like so that these members can also be secured to the Wall if desired. However it is not necessary to so secure these members because they are supported on the lip 26 and can be slid along it as shown in FIG. 1.
The depending rack member 28 is provided with a series of apertures such as at 46 for the reception of the usual pegs or hooks which are well known in the art.
As indicated in FIG. 4, one may purchase as many of the separate parts from this rack and of such length as he may desire in order to provide a display rack, tool rack or the like of almost any configuration which is square or rectangular. The members 10 may be as long or as short as desired and may be arranged in abutting or even spaced relationship but always horizontal. The article supporting rack members 28 may be as long or as short as desired and may be positioned anywhere along the lengths of the combined members 10, 10. Thus it will be seen that a window may be outlined; or articles already hung on the wall or displayed in certain ways may be avoided by placing the members 28 at each side thereof; any kind of rectangular or square configuration may be provided or of course the article supporting members 28 may be arranged solidly from end to end of the members 10 at the desire of the person providing the rack. Cutting or sawing of any kind is not necessary and the rack is easily taken down as well as put up so that it may be changed from location to location and the various parts thereof shifted and replaced as conditions may dictate. The rack is particularly advantageous for the display of small tools, hardware, etc., in stores but is also useful in garages and in the home as well as in factories, tool rooms, etc.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. An article support comprising a main support member adapted to be mounted in generally horizontal position on a wall or the like, said main support member comprising a generally horizontal portion, a flange at each edge thereof, one of said flanges being arranged along the top edge of said main support member, and the other flange being arranged along the lower edge thereof, means securing the flange at the upper edge to said wall, the flange at the lower end of the main support member having an edge bearing against said wall, said flanges being of substantially equal extent, an upturned supporting lip extending along the flange at the lower edge of the main support member,
a series of generally vertically arranged apertured article-supporting racks dependingly mounted on the main support member andiinterengaging means between the horizontal support member and the vertical racks for dependently supporting the latter on the former,
said interengaging means comprising the upturned supporting lip and a downturned lip on each depending rack at the upper end thereof, the lower ends of the 3 racks being plain, the turned-down lip on each deending rack being slidable along the supporting lip on the main support'member to adjust the racks correspondingly,
each depending rack including a main body portion,
a vertically arranged flange at each edge thereof and being adapted to contact said Wall, and means on said flanges providing for attachment of said racks to the wall in selected adjusted position along the main support member.
-2. The article support of claim 1 wherein the firstnamed means includesa vertical extension on the flange at the upper edge of said main supporting member and a series of apertures therein adapted toreceive fasteners.
