BRACKET. APPLICATION FILED AUG.25, |919.
:1,341,198. Patented May 25,1920T ll-IIIIMHIIIIIIIHIIIHIIII W' UNITED STATES GEORGE A. RUPLE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BRACKET.
Application filed August 25, 1919.
To all whom t 'may concern j Be it known that I, Gnome A. RUPL'E, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n brackets of the suspension type wherein a sliding sleeve operates in conjunction with a vertically disposed suspended member to support a bracket at `various elevations.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved adjustable bracket designed for a great variety of uses.
A further object is t0 provide an 'improved bracket of the character described adapted to be adjusted relatively to the object suspended or supported.
A still further object is to provide an 'improved adjustable bracket adapted to sus pend'hird cages, hanging flower baskets and other objects at a distance from a wall or the like. i
Another object is to provide an improved adjustable bracket whereby two or more brackets may be used to support one or more shelves or the like at various elevations.
It is also an object to provide an improved adjustable bracket which may be used for suspending an object close to or at various distances from the wall or partition.
A still further object is to provide a bracket having improved means for preventing a lateral movement of the depending portion of the bracket.
l accomplish these several objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specification and drawin s, and in which: j
4igure 1 is a broken side elevation of my improved bracket, partly in section;
Fig. 2 is a front broken elevation of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken detail disclosing the slots by means of which the bracket is detachably connected to a vertical suspending member.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a vertically disposed suspending member having splayed hooks 2 Specification of Letters Patent.
. fatented May 25, 1 920.
serial No. 320,043.
on the upper end thereof to engage a molding or the like, not shown.
One of the novel features of my invention comprises these splayed hooks 2 by means of which a lateral movement of the depending or suspending portion of the vertically disposed member is retarded or preif'ented.
Slidably mounted upon the vertically disposed member 1 and below the hooks 2 on the upper end thereof is a sleeve 3 having headed studs i projecting from one side thereof, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
A screw G is screwed or mounted within the sleeve 3 and arranged to engage the vertically disposed member; 1 to prevent movement of said sleeve 3 upon said member 1, said screw also operating as a suspending member for the suspension of picture wires or the like whereby a picture may be suspended against a wall or partition, not shown.
At the lower end of the vertical member 1 I have provided a suitable friction butg ton 7 adapted to engage a wall or the like against which the bracket is suspended and thereby prevent, in conjunction with the hooks 2, lateral movement of the lower end of the member 1.
A bracket 8 is provided with apertures 9 having slotted extensions 10, said apertures 9 being arranged to engage the heads of the studs 4 on .the sleeve 3 and the extensions 10 being adapted to engage the shanks of said studs between said heads and the sleeve 3 to detachably retain or support the bracket 8 upon the studs fi of said sleeve 3.
A hook l1 has the shank 'l2 thereof slidably mounted. within the outer end of the bracket 8 and a suitable screw 14 is mounted within said bracket 8 and adapted to engage the shank 12 of the hook 11 and thereby prevent movement of said hook or shank within the said bracket 8.
The hook 11, with its shank 12, and the bracket 8 comprises an eXtensible bracket by means of which objects may be suspended at various distances from a wall or partition against which the device is suspended.
In operation the screw 6 of the sleeve 3 may be loosened to disengage the vertical member 1 after which said sleeve may be moved or adjusted to the desired elevation.
Similarly the screw 14 of the bracket 8 may be utilized to secure the hook 11 the required distance from the wall or the vertical member l. Or the bracket 8 may be detached from the sleeve 3 and the Yscrew 6 may be used for the suspension of pictures or the like.
Without removing the hook ll the one or more devices may be suspended adjacent each other to supporta shelf or-the like, not shown. Or by providing one or more brackets 8 on the same vertical member l one or more shelves ,may be suspended by means of the vertical members l, the hooks .11 remaining` in position to provide a means for suspending various and sundry small articles.
It should also be noted that a further novel feature of the splayed hooks 2 is that by meansof this arrangement a broad base of-support or suspension is obtained which will prevent lateral Amovement of the hook ll so Ythat articles suspended therefrom, such as bird cages, hanging flower baskets and the like, `will be provided with an adequate v and firm support.
-Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. .A bracket .comprising a vertically disposed member having splayed hooks on the upper' end thereof to Aengage a molding or the like; a sleeve slidably mounted upon the vertical member; a screw mounted within the sleeve .to .engage the vertical member and thereby secure said sleeve against movement-on said member, said screw-operating as a suspending` member'to engage picture Wires orthe like; and a bracket detaehably mounted upon the sleeve and having a hook on the outer end thereof.
2. A bracket comprising a vertically disposed member having splayed hooks on the upper end thereof to engage a `molding or the like ;4 a sleeve slidably mounted upon the vertical member; a screw mounted within the sleeve to engage the vertical member and thereby secure said sleeve against movement on said member, said screw operating as a suspending member to vengage picture wires or the like; and a detach ably mounted bracket upon the sleeve; and a hook slidably mounted within .the brackfet whereby an object may be supported at various distances from the vertical member.
