Fetter, Dayton, Ohio, assignor of one-half to The present invention relates generally to new and useful improvements in drape, etc., hangers and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a fixture of this character comprising novel means whereby a valance and drapes may be suspended from a point closely adjacent the ceiling or at substantially the level of the upper portion of a window frame on which the device is mounted.

Another very important object of the'invention is to provide a combination valance, drape, etc., hanger of the aforementioned character which may be expeditiously installed without materially damaging or defacing the window frame, the adjacent wall, etc.

Still another very important object of the invention is to provide a drape, valance, etc. hanger of the character set forth which may be readily adjusted to meet various conditions.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a combination hanger which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efiicient and reliable in use, compact, inconspicuous and which may be manufactured at low cost.

All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in front elevation, showing a window frame equipped with hangers constructed in accordance with the present invention;

Figure 2 is a view in side elevation thereof with portions of the hanger broken away in section;

Figure 3 is a perspective view of the hanger per se;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the device, showing the members separated; and

Figure 5 is a detail view in perspective of the lower valance or drapery panel supporting arm.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises an angular bracket 6 of suitable metal. The bracket 6 is firmly secured in position on an upper corner portion of a window frame 7 by countersunk screws 8. The bracket 6 includes an upwardly and forwardly inclined channel shaped leg 9 having a longitudinal slot 10 in its bight portion. The bracket 6 further includes, on its lower end, a forwardly projecting lower leg 11 of inverted channel shape having a longitudinal slot 12 in the bight portion thereof.

Mounted for vertical sliding adjustment in the upper leg 9 of the bracket 6 is a metallic rod or bar 13 of polygonal cross-section. A thumb screw 14 is threadedly mounted in the lower end portion of the bar 13 and operable in the slot 10 for securing said bar in adjusted position. The bar 13 terminates in a forwardly and then downwardly extending upper end portion 15 having a substantially C-shaped recess or socket 16 therein. The

2,825,5Zfi Patented Mar. 4, 1958 2 recess or socket 16 is for the reception of a conventional, correspondingly shaped drape rod 17. The rod 17 is snapped into the socket 16.

Mounted for longitudinal sliding adjustment on the portion 15 of the bar 13 is an arm 18 of the shape shown, said arm including an upwardly and forwardly curved free end portion 19 having a substantially triangular head 29 on its free end. On one side, the arm 18 further includes a depending flange 21. The arm 18 further includes a longitudinal slot 22 which accommodates a thumb screw 23 for securing said arm in adjusted position. The thumb screw 23 is threadedthrough an opening 24-whichis provided therefor in the upper portion 15 of the bar 13 and engageable with the drape rod 17 for clamping said rod in the socket 16.

Mounted for longitudinal sliding adjustment on the lower leg 11 of the bracket 6 is a forwardly and then downwardly extending arm 25. A thumb screw 26 is threadedly mounted in the inner end portion of the arm 25 and operablein'the slot 12 for securing said arm in adjusted position. The depending or downwardly extending portion of the arm 25 has formed therein a substantially C-shaped recess or socket 27 for the reception of'a drape or traverse rod when the members 13, 18, etc. are not in use. Athreaded aperture 28 in the inner end portion of the arm 25 accommodates the thumb screw. 26; The arm 25 is further provided, in its outer end portion, with a, threaded opening 29, the purpose of which will be presently set forth.

- Pivotally mounted for swinging movement in a horizontal plane on the outer end portion of the arm 25, is a valance supporting arm 30 which is substantially similar in construction to the arm 18. The arm 30 includes an upwardly and then forwardly and downwardly curved outer end portion 31 which terminates in a substantially triangular head 32 at its free or outer end. The inner end portion of the arm 30 is apertured to accommodate a thumb screw 33 which is threaded through the opening 29 for securing said arm 30 in position on the arm 25. The thumb screw 33 is also engageable with a drape or traverse rod in the socket 27 for securing said drape or traverse rod in position.

It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Of course, the hangers are used in pairs, one being installed on each upper corner portion of the window frame 7. When it is desired to suspend the valance and drapes from a point adjacent the ceiling, the bars 13 are mounted in the upper legs 9 of the brackets 6 and secured in the desired adjusted position by the thumb screws 14. The drape rod 17 is then mounted in the sockets 16 of the elements 15, the arms 18 are adjusted as desired and the thumb screws 23 are tightened. The conventional valance rod, as at 34, may then be snapped over the heads 20 on the outer or forward end portions of the arms 18. When the valance and drapes are to be hung from a position substantially in the horizontal, plane of the upper portion of the window frame 7, the rod 17 is mounted in the sockets 27 of the arms 25. The arms 30 are then swung outwardly to the position indicated in broken lines in Figure 2 of the drawing and secured by tightening the thumb screws 33. The thumb screws 33 also assist in securing the drape rod 17 in the sockets 27. The valance rod 31 is then snapped over the substantially triangular heads 32 on the outer ends of the arms 30.

It is believed that the many advantages of a drape, valance, etc. hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the "details of construction may be resorted to which will fall I l within the scope of the invention as claimed.
