Application September 25, 1946; Serial No. 699,280
This invention relates to improvements in 2 claims. (c1. 248-29) hanger devices and it consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The device with which the invention is more especially concerned is of the kind adapted for the hanging support of a picture, mirror, plaque or the like from a coacting hook on an upright wall.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a hanger device of this kind whereby the panel-like member, to which it is attached, may be shifted on the coacting hook to better position the upper and lower edge of said member in an even condition in a horizontal plane, and which device prevents the accidental dislodgment of the panel-like member as when dusting in the vicinity of the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hanger device of this kind, which is simple in construction and which may be made from sheet material for low cost production and sale.
Also, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this kind, which may beused in con-. nection with associated supportinglwall hooks of diierent widths.
Furthermore, it is an Vobject of the inventio to provide a device of this kind, which may be made from a sheet metal stamping requiring only simple dies for its manufacture.. l Y
The above mentioned objects of the invention, as well as others, together with the advantages thereof will more fully appear as the specification proceeds. Y
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of the improved Q device when attached in operative position upon the back of the panel-like member to be supported thereby, upon a hook on an upright wall.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device and part of the panel-like member, to which it is attached for supporting the Same from an associated wall hook, as taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view as taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the engagementof a hook portion of small diameter therewith as will be later mentioned.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the same when engaged with a hook portion of a width and cross section diierent from that appearing in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a view in elevation, on an enlarged scale, of a iiat sheet metal blank from which the device is produced.
. portion.
In general, the improved hanger device is a unitary one in theform of bracket clip preferably produced from a flat sheet metal stamped blank, thereafter bent upon transverse lines so as to include a flat upper portion for attachmentto the back of the panel-like member to be supported, a second and rearwardly extending spacing portion and a wall engaging third portion extending downwardly from the rear part of the second portion. The rst portion has openings therein for the passage of suitable fasteners whereby the device may be attached to the back of the panel-like member to be supported by means of a hook pro'- jecting from an upright wall. The second and third portions each have an opening of considerable size therein, for the passage .of coacting parts ofsaid hook therethrough. The upper edge of the opening in the third or wall engaging portion of the device is formed with a plurality oflongitudinally spaced, downwardly facing recesses. or notches which are separated by intermediate teeth and certain non-adjacent teeth are deeper than those between them so that the device may be usedV either with Ahooks having a round cross section of small diameter or with hooks having a flat cross section of a width greater than said diameter.
Referring now in detail to that embodimentof the invention, and especially to Fig. l thereof, the improved device includes a at upper portion i0 having laterally spaced openings II (see Figs. 3, 4 and E) therein for thepassage therethrough .of fastener elements I2, whereby the device may be attached in operative position to the back of the panel-like member I3 to be supported. The member may be a picture, a mirror, or a wall plaque or the like.
-The bottom of the upper portion is connected by an inside corner I4 to the front margin of a secondv or spacing portion I5 arranged at substantially a right angleto-and extending rearwardly from the bottom of said upper portion. In said second portion is a relatively wide opening I 6, which may extend into a part of the rst The rear part of said second portion is connected by an outside corner I'I with the upper part of a third portion I8 which extends in a generally outward and downward direction and terminates in a lower wall engaging portion which is preferably arranged in a plane parallel with that of the upper portion. Y
The third portion has an opening I9 therein of a width approximating that of the opening I6 in the second or spacing portion. The lower edge ISE of the opening I9 is disposed in the plane of the junction of said wall engaging and said third portions respectively. The upper edge of said opening is provided with a series of inverted V-shaped, downwardly opening notches or recesses 2l separated by V-shaped teeth 22 and certain non-adjacent teeth 22a are deeper from top to bottom than those teeth 22 therebetween.
The bracket clip described is produced from the at blank of sheet material shown in Fig. 5 and which is bent or folded along the transverse lines 23, 24 and 25 respectively to produce the inside and outside corners before mentioned and the junction cornerl or bend between the bottom of the third portion and the wall .engagementportion.
When the panel-like member to be supported; which is indicated by the numeral I3, is of such size as to need the use of only one device' for `its support, said device is attached as by means of tasteners' I2 to theupper central part of the back thereof. When said member is of such size as to require the use oi more than one of said devices for its support, said devices are evenly spaced apart along said upper central part of the back thereof..
Assuming that the panel-like member is of such size* as to require only one device for its support from a suitable upwardly facing hook 26, of small diameter cross` sectional stock, projecting from an upright wall 21, the hanging procedure is as follows-2 the `member If3'is moved, back first, toward the hook 26 so that the hook will pass through the opening I9 in the third. portion I8 whereby the bottom; portion of the device engages the surface of thel wall. The member I3 is then lowered slightly sothat the treek upturn'ed end portion of the hook 26 passes through the opening I6 in the second or'spacing portion of the device when another part of said hook- `at the bottom of the bend thereof` will engage in one of the notches 2I and preferably that one which is disposed in the longitudinalmedial' line thereof.
Very often the device may be applied to the member I3 in a home by' a relatively inexperienced person and therefore the device might not be applied exactly centrally of the. back` of the member so' that said `member may hang skewedand tilt to' one side. By lifting up on said member to clear thev bend of the hook 26, the panel member' with the device thereon may be shifted laterally so that said bend of the hook may be. engaged in that adjacent recess which will make the member balance and harig evenly. In Fig. 4 we have illustrated the device in use in connection with a hooki having a bend portion 26a of a width greater than the diameter of a portion of they hook in Figs. 1 andV 2. Under such conditions, said wider bend portion will be engaged in the space between the two wider non-- adjacent teeth 22a- 22a with the edges thereof engaging the facing edges of` said'deeper teeth.
The device iszsim'plein construction for low cost production,` is easily attached to:- the picture, mirror or plaque to be supported and maybe readily engaged withwall. hooks of difierent shapesl and sizes at the bend thereof.
The form, arrangement, and proportionl of' the parts is such that the panel' Itl cannot `be disengaged from the hook by merely pushing the panel I3 upwardly or by knocking it from one side. The reason for this is-.that thebottom of thehook 26 willf engage the edge I-9E= dening a part of opening I9r beiore'f the hook has become entirely free of the member I0. Hence to release the panel it must rst be swung outwardly so as to extend away from the wall, at which time the panel may be lifted from the hook.
While in describing the invention we have referred in detail to the form, arrangement and construction of the parts forming the device, the same is to be considered only in the illustrativo sense so that we do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be specically set forth in the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
