REVERSIBLE HANGER MOUNTING FOR PICTURES AND THE LIKE F iled March 7, 1956 )ZucM Z7 v 226A Patented Nov. 16, 1937 2,099,332- *REVERSI LE :HANGERIMOUNTING FOR J PICTURESANDTHE LIKE V :Camillo Di Nu ccio, Providence, R. I., assignor of V g one-half' to John .Bevilacqua,gProvidence, R.v I. I
My present invention relates to household hardware, and has particular reference to an improved construction for a reversible hanger mounting for pictures and the like. I
a It is theprincipal object of my invention to provide a novel picture hanger which may be used alternatively for hanging pictures 'on nails inserted in the walls, or forutilizing hanging cords or wire. v
'It is another object of my invention to provide a very simpleconstruction'which may be readily manufactured by means of a low cost operation, whereby the cost ofjmanufac'ture is reduced, and
- the selling priceis reasonable.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view,.my invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and more specifically defined in the claims appended thereto.
'In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the'back of a picture frame, showing the novel hanger in operating position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the novel hanger; V l Fig. 3 Ba sectional view showing how the novel hanger'is utilized with wall nails or the i like; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing how they novel hanger is used with cords or wires.
7 Referring to the drawing, the picture frame ID has a novel hanger I i mounted thereon, the novel hanger H being shown in enlarged detail in Fig. 2, and comprising a strip of sheet metal bent, preferably by a stamping operation, in the form illustrated so as to provide a back l2, sides l3, and laterally positioned ends M, the ends being provided with screw or nail openings l5 centrally located and with centering and locking prongs l6 which are preferably struck from the material itself. The back' I2 is cut out as disclosed, with a V-cut or slot ll at one end and two arms l8 inclined as illustrated to form a guideway and having suilicient resilience to give when forced over a nail shank, as hereinafter disclosed; the arms 18 being spaced from the body of the back to provide aligned recesses l9.
When the improved hanger is mounted on the back of a picture frame with theV slot I! in upward position, the novel hanger is; suitable for use with nails, screws and other picture hanging devices of similar nature, the shank- 20 of the nail 2i entering between the arms I8 to be guided towards the V slot and shifting Application arc 7, 1936, Serial 'hf 67,657;
3 Claims. (Cl.-2 18 :28)p I said arms laterally against their resilience to 22, whereby it is impossible to remove the hanger. 7
from the nail, and therefore the picture from the wall, unless intentionally done by'thrusting up- V Wardly. An upward thrust causes the shank 20 to enter between the curved ends 23 of the arms I8 and to thrust them aside so as to permit re,-
' moval of the hanger from the nail. My improved construction therefore provides a very simple arrangement, easily attached to the back of a picture or the like, and adapted tobe securely locked in place on the shank of a nail or any similar fastening, the removal bein easilyefiected if desired.
The position of the resilient arms l8, which are spaced from the body of the back to provide recesses l9, permits an alternative use of the novel picture hanger in that the mounting on the back of the frame may be reversed, whereby the recesses IB are upwardly positioned and a cord. or wire loop 24 may be readily locked to the hanger by first inserting the wire loop inwardly'between the arms 18 and then passing the sides of the loop outwardly into the recesses l9, as indicated-in Fig. 4; My improved invention therefore may be used for hanging pictures on nails and the like or may be used in conjunction with supporting wires and cords as preferred.
While I have described a specific constructional embodiment of my invention, made'of stamped sheet material, and therefore adapted 'ofthe plate having two resilient arms extending upwardly from the edge thereof with their ada jacent edges angularly disposed with relation to each other to provide'a guide passage for a nail shank, the edge of said opening opposite the guide passage being formed as a seat, the upper portions of said arms normally closing said shank receiving opening to a nail shank but being movable by pressure of a nail shank on said adjacent edges to permit movement of the nail shank past said upper portions and into said opening for positioning in said seat.
2. In a picture hanger device, a plate having a nail shank receiving opening, the lower po-rtion of the plate having two resilient arms extending upwardly from the edge thereof with their adjacent edges angularly disposed with relation to each other to provide a guide passage for a nail shank, the edge of said opening opposite the guide passage being formed as a seat,
the upper portions of said arms normally closing said shank receiving opening to a nail shank but being movable by pressure of a nail shank on said adjacent edges to permit movement of the: nail shank past said upper portions and into said opening for positioning in said seat, re-
each other to provide a guide passage, the upper portions of said arms normally closing said open ing to entrance of a wire or the like from the guide passage, but being movable to permit passage of a wire or the like past said upper portions and into said opening, recesses being formed between said arms and the sides of the plate and communicating With said opening.
