Description

( Md'deL) D. GRIDLEY.
PICTURE HANGER. No. 332,198. Patented Dec. 8. 1885.
ttorney 7 UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
DWIGHT GRIDLEY, OF NEWARK, NE\V JERSEY.
PICTURE-HANGER.
QPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,198, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed June 8, 1885. Serial No. 169,023.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DWIGET GRIDLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to picture-hangers or devices designed to suspend pictures upon a wall; and the said invention consists in the improvements hereinafter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front perspective view of one of my improved hanging devices. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section illustrating the device locked on a nail-head; Fig. 4, a modification illustrating my improvement constructed for attachment to moldings.
The invention consists, primarily, in having two portions, one of which is movable relative to the other, one of said portions being designed to engage a nail-head or molding and also hold the picture-cord, while the other portion is pivotally movable to lock said cord on said first-mentioned portion, as shown in Fig. 1.
The improvement is constructed for engagement with an ordinary nail-head. A refers to a base or bracket portion, which may be of any desired ornamental formas, for instance, a representation of aleaf, as illustrated. This portion A has a circular depression, a, which is provided with a central perforation, I). Below such depression is formed an elongated slot, B, the upper portion of which is formed with straight sides and with rear parallel flanges, 0. The lower portion of said slot is formed to presentan enlarged circular opening without any rear flanges. A curved lug, d, projects outward from the portion A, immediately below the lower circular opening of the slot, and has its terminal portion curved or bent slightly upward. A recess, 6, is formed in the base portion A, at one side of and communicating with the straight portion of the slot.
(No model.)
0 refers to a portion which has an offset, f, on its rear side, at the upper part thereof, and provided with a perforation, g. The said offset is designed to bear in the depressed portion a of the base, so as to have a bearing therein, while a rivet, h, is designed to pass through the perforations g and b, and thus pivotally secure the portion 0 on the base A. The lower part of the portion 0 is cut away at its rear, to form in connection with the lug d an opening in which the picture-cord may rest. An car, i, extends rearwardly from the lower part of the section Gwithin the slot in the base portion A, and when the portion 0 is swung laterally on its pivot is designed to enter the recess e, the end of said ear contacting with the end and bottom of said recess to retain the said portion in such lateral position.
The portion 0, for the sake of ornamentation, is represented in the form of a bird, to correspond with the ornamental base or portion A.
In operation the portion 0 is moved laterally, as described, and an ordinary nail is then driven into the wall, the head thereof caused to enter the circular portion of the slot from the rear side of the base portion A, and the said base portion moved vertically downward, so that the head of the nail will enter the straight portion of the slot and be engaged by the flanges of the same. The picturecord is then hung upon the lug d, the portion 0 restored to its first position, so that its lower portion abuts against the lug d in order to lock the picture-cord on said lug, while its rear end will occupy the lower part of the straight portion of the slot and lock the nail against withdrawal therefrom. It will thus be seen that by my improvement a single movement of one portion relative to the other not only effects the locking of the picture-cord against removal, but additionally insures the secure retention of the device upon an ordinary nail-head. Furthermore, the improvement is durable and simple, and its construction of such a nature as to enable it to be produced at a moderate cost.
In Fig. 4 I have represented a modified form of the device designed for attachment to a molding. In said modified device a molding hook is substituted for the base portion A,
to the upper part of which hook is pivotally secured by a rivet, i, a portion, 0. The rear face of the latter portion is provided with a recess, D, in which the cord-holding portion d of the hook is designed to rest. One of the sides of said recess is cut away at j, to permit the portion (1 to be swung laterally relative to the hook in order to remove or engage the picture-cord from or with the same.
I am aware of the construction disclosed in the patent granted to one Healy for a hawserclamp, dated November 8, 1881, and numbered 249,177, and I do not broadly claim any feature set forth in said patent.
I claim- 1. The combination, in a picture-hanger, of
an integral suspending or supporting portion,
a hook located on said portion at right angles thereto for the reception of the picture-cord, and a portion, 0, pivoted on said first-named portion, and adapted to be moved over and engage said hook so as to close the same, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a picture-hanger, of abase portion having a slot adapted to re- 25 ceive a nail-head, and a second portion, 0, adapted to lock said nail-head in said slot, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a picture-hanger, of a base portion having a slot adapted to receive a nail-head, a lug for the reception of the picture-cord, and a portion, 0, adapted to lock said nail in said slot and said cord on said lug, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in a picture-hanger, of 35 a base portion having a slot, a, recess 6, and lug d, and a portion, 0, pivotally secured and provided with an ear, f, and adapted to lock the nail in position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 40 presence of two witnesses.
DWIGHT GRIDLEY.
