PATENT OFF-ICE.
NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PETER REINSOHMIDT, OF SAME PLACE.
PICTURE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION' fQrming part of Letters Patent No. 508,540, dated November 14, 1893.
Application filed June 21,1893- To all whontit may concern;-
Be it known that I, FREDERIOH GAISSER, a citizen of the United States, resi ding at Rochester, in the county of Monroe, in the State of New York, have invented an Improved Picture-Hanger, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved picture-hanger, the construction and operation of which are fully set forth and illustrated in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, the novel features thereof being specified in the claimsannexed to the said specification.
In the accompanying drawings, representing my improved picture-hanger,-Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. '2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the slotted lug detached.
My improved picture-hanger, consists essentially of the frame A, provided with the. point or points'B B which engage in the wall 0, and the pivoted cord-hook E,which operates to force the point or points F F into the ceiling D. The cord-hook'is pivoted to the frame, at- J, between the lugs L L, and projects outward, being given a suitable curved form adapted to receive and hold the cord P on which the picture is suspended. At the end next to the wall the cord-hook is pivoted to the lower end of the rod H, as indicated at I, Fig. 2. The weight of the picture suspended on the cord-hook serves to force the point or points F F into the ceiling, while at the same time the point or pointsB B are forced into the wall so that the picture is firmly sustained,th,e heavier the picture the greater the capacity of the apparatus to support the weight. As indicated in the accompanying drawings, thepoints or prongs B B and F F are lnadedonble, and this is the construction which I prefer to adopt, although it will be understood that a single point maybe used in either or both of these places. The frame A may be given any suitable ornamental form. At its lower end it is provided with a slot for the reception of the cord-lever or hook E. At its upper part it is provided on the side next the wall with a slotted lug N,
of any suitable size or material.
Serial No.473,30'7. (Nomodell) through which the I'OdIH slides. The lug N is slotted, as indicated at R, Fig. 3, through which slot the flattened lower end T of the rod H is introduced in assembling the parts together. The slot R is conveniently formed by castin g,the holein-which the rod H slides being bored or reamed.
The operation of my improved picturehanger will have been understood from the preceding description. The points B being inserted in the wall at-a suitable distance below the ceiling, thepoints F are then forced into the ceiling or aprojecting portion of the wall by pulling down on the cord-lever, and
the picture being hung on the cord, the hanger is caused to adhere firmly in place.
My improved picture-hanger may be made It is cheap in construction, and durable and ornamental in use, and may be readily affixed to the wall and ceiling in any desired position, without the use of screws, nails, or other attaching devices.
I claim I 1. The herein-described picture-hanger,consisting essentially of the frame, having one or more points, adapted to engage in the wall, the pivoted cord-hook, and the sliding rod, provided at its upper end with one or more points adapted to engage with the ceiling, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the frame A,provided with point or points B B, of the pivoted cord-hook E, and the sliding rod H, having point F, and connected at its lower end to the cord-hook, and arranged to slide through a suitable support N on the frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the frame A, provided with point or points B B, and the slotted lug N, of the pivoted cord-hook E, and the sliding rod H, provided with pointF andflattened head T, and connected at its lowerend with the cord-hook and arranged to slide through the lug N, substantially as described.
FREDERIOH GAISSER.
