EDGAR O. GIBSON, OF MARION, INDIANA.
BROOM-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1907.
Application filed August 9,1906. Serial No. 329,909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR O. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Holders; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for hanging brooms or the like upon a wall or other support, and it consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient device of this character with which a broom handle or the like may be quickly and easily engaged, and irom which it may be as readily disengaged.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of the improved broom holder or hanger; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
The improved broom holder or hanger 1 is adapted to be pivotally mounted by means of staples or similar devices 2, upon a wall or other support 3. It is formed from a single piece of wire by bending the same at points adjacent to its center to form a gripping jaw 4, which is adapted to engage a notch or recess 5, formed at a suitable point in the handle 6 of a broom or other object, which is to be suspended by the device. The broom handle engaging jaw is supported at the proper distance from the wall 8 by angular arms 13, which have vertically-extending portions 7, adapted to rest normally against the wall 3. At the upper ends of the portions 7 are inwardly-extending pintle portions or members 8, parallel with the jaw 4 and which pass through the staples or hearing devices 2. The inner ends of the pintle portions are bent to provide right angular arms 9 and have their ends brought together and united, as at 10, so as to form a stop-loop 1]., which is disposed above the loop formed by the jaw 4; and its arms. This stop-loop 11 is provided for the purpose of limiting the upward swinging movement of the jaw 4, and also for limiting the upward movement of the broom handle 6 beneath said jaw, as will be seen upon reference to Fig. 2, in which the dotted lines show the elevated position of the holder.
It will be observed that when the broom handle is pushed up under the lower loop, the latter willbe elevated, until the portions 12 of the arms 9 of the upper loop engage the wall 3, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. When in this position, the upper end of the broom handle engages the stop loop 11 and is prevented from passing further through the lower loop. As the broom handle is lowered from this dotted line position, the
jaw 4 swings downwardly into the notch or recess 5 and holds the broom against the wall or other support 3, as seen in full lines in Fig. 2. In order to release the broom handle, it is only necessary to give the latter a slight turn to disengage the notch 5 from the jaw 4, and then pull said handle from beneath said jaw.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
A broom holder made of a single piece of wire and having a straight gripping jaw to engage a notch in a broom handle, angularly bent arms at the ends of said gripping portion, inwardlyprojecting pintle or pivot members, parallel with the gripping jaw and extending from the said arms, and a stop loop between the pintle or pivot members, extending therefrom, and having stop arms at an angle to the first-mentioned arms, and a portion, parallel with the gripping jaw, for engagement by the end of the broom handle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDGAR C. GIBSON.
