OU'IH CAROLINA, ASSIGNOR TO ROBERT O.
BROOKS, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
Application filed September 12, 1919. Serial No. 828,287.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. HUGIms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Greenville and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 4 This invention relates to new and useful improvements in brushes and more particularly to devices for attaching screw threaded handles to brush heads and has for one of its objects the provision of means which will reinforce and strengthen the brush head at its point of connection to the handle as well as firmly attaching the handle to the head and also permits of the inclination of the handle in respect to the head to be reversed so that the reverse use of the brush can be obtained to cause even wearing .of said brush.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a brush of the above stated character, which shall be sim 1e, durable and eflicient, and which may e manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost. With these and other objects 1n view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combi nation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed;
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush constructed in accordance with my invention a Fig. .2 is a transverse sectional view of the same,
b Fig. 3 is a'perspective of one of said memers Fig. 4 is an end view of one of the members.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a brush head having the usual bristles 2. The brush head 1 has a raised or enlarged portion 2 formed upon its top face at a point intermediate its ends and which is provided with inwardly directed converging openings 3. Transversely curved attaching p ates 4 are arranged on the enlar ed portion 2 of the head 1 so that one of their edges abut each other while their other edges are disposed on the front and rear faces of the head 1. The attaching plates are secured to the head 1 by fasteners 5 and are adapted to strengthen and reinforce the head at .the enlarged portion 2. The plates 4 have formed thereon internally screw threaded cylindrical members 6 which project'beyond each face of the plates and are arranged in an inclined plane in relation to the plates so as to fit within the openings 3 of the enlarged portion 2 of the head 1. The inner ends of the members 6 project a considerable distance beyond the inner faces of the plates 4 so that they extend a considerable distance into the openings 3 for reinforcing said openings and preventing them from becoming worn or mutilated during the use of the brush. The outer ends of the members 6 project a slight distance beyond the outer faces of the plates 4; so that the screw threaded ends 7 of the handle 8 can be readily turned into the members 6 for firmly connecting the handle to the head 1. The double use of the members 6 permits the reversing of the handle on the brush head 1, that is, the inclination of the handle in respect to the head 1 can be reversed whenever desired. This being principally desirable during the use of the brush to cause the same to wear evenly.
,While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
