l 1 Claim.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in paint brushes and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a paint brush including a plurality of bristle supporting heads that may be quickly and readily disassembled facilitating the brush to be conveniently arranged in various widths to be used for different types of work.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a brush including a plurality of juXta-positioned heads and novel and improved means for retaining said adjacent heads relative to each other.

further object of the present invention is to provide a paint brush all parts oi which are so designed as to permit the same to be conveniently balanced when in use and which may be employed for painting trim work and other 'small types of molding as well as for painting large areas such as walls and the like.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a paint brush that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Gther objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation asV more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure l is a front elevational view of the present paint brush;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal view, partly in section and partly in elevation taken substantially on the plane of section line 2-2 of Figure l.

Figure 3 is an elevational view of the present paint brush the retaining body being removed therefrom;

Figure fi is a transverse horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line ll-i of Figure l; and

Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the intermediate brush sections used in conjunction with the present invention.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I0 represents a substantially rectangular body open at two ends and which is preferably formed from a single blank of metallic material to provide a rear wall I2 spaced parallel side walls i4 and I6 and a pair 2 of complemental forward walls IB and 20 having abutting

28 and 30 on its opposite sides. The inner portion of this head 26 is provided with a preferably metallic wearing surface 32 also having channels 34 that embrace the

28 and 30. The head 26 is removably secured within the body l0 by the use of fasteners 36 that extend through the front walls i8 and 20.

Adjacent each side of the main head section 25 is a pair of intermediate head sections 38 having longitudinal grooves 4Q and 42 in their opposite sides. The inner portions of these heads 33 are provided with recessed metallic coverings i@ having

channels

46 and 48 that enter the grooves t0 and 42. The metallic channels 46 of each of the intermediate head sections slidably engage the channels 34 of the main head section.

The numeral 50 represents a pair end head sections that are disposed adjacent each of the intermediate head sections 38, each having a flat outer face 52 and longitudinal ribs 54 on its opposite face. The inner portions of these end head sections 5G are also embraced by recessed metallic coverings 56 that are provided with channels 53 that embrace the ribs 54. These channels 58 slidably engage the remaining channels 48 of the intermediate head sections 38.

The outer end of the main section 26 terminates in an elongated handle 6l! facilitating the convenient handling of the entire brush structure when assembled.

Each of the head sections 25, 38 and `50 are removably secured to their coverings by fasteners 62. The sections 26 and 33 are removably secured to the walls I8 and 2t by the fasteners 36 that permit the head sections to be disassembled for reducing the width of the brush assembly when desirable.

As best illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, the ends 64 of the head sections Z5, 38 and 5l) terminate adjacent the ends 66 of the

32, 44 and 56, and fixedly engage resilient Y 3 pads 68 that support a plurality of bristles 10.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A moredetailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A paint brush comprising a hollow body, a handle carried by said body, a plurality of elongated side by side juxtapositioned brush heads positioned in said body, fasteners removably securing certain of said brush heads relative to said body, and bristles carried by and'disposed longitudinally of said brush heads, said brush heads including a central enlarged brush head having ribs projecting outwardly from opposite sides, intermediate heads flanking said central head having longitudinal grooves slidably receiving said ribs, a pair of end brush heads having ribs, said intermediate heads having recesses receiving the ribs of said end brush heads.
