' Specification of Iietters Patent.
Patented Nov. 17, 1914.
- Appljcgflon filed Febrnm 30,1914. Serial No. 819,985.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Howaao C. BnowN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and limproved-Brush, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to brushing and scrubbing, and has particular reference to the construction of brush heads whereby such devices are rendered more convenient and serviceable than those commonly employed.
Among the objects of the invention is to construct a brush frame or head of sheet metal, principally by stamping from metal of uniform thiclmess, certain fastening devices being provided whereby the head may be easily taken apart and reassembled with a new set of bristles or brushes therein.
Another object of the invention is to construct a whitewash or bill posters brush in such a manner as to render the removal of worn bristles an easy expedient.
The foregoing and other objects of the 111- vention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a brush head made in accordance with a preferred embodiment of this invention, the location of the bristles being indicated in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a partial plan and transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 or just above the bristles; Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections on the corresponding lines of Fig. 2; and Flg. 5 1s a view of one of the bundles of bristles detached.
The several parts of the device may be made of any suitable materials, and the relative sizes and proportions, as well as the general design of the mechanism, may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention.
the form-of a trapezoid or having its upper and lower edges parallel and its side edges divergent corresponding to the taper of the socket pieces and whereby the side plates 10 are substantially straight throughout their general length. The webs 12 are perforated at preferably two places for the accommodation of binding screw bolts 13 whereby the two side plates may be clamped in proper spaced relation in practice.
At 1-1 I show one of the brush elements comprising a bundle of bristles 15 and a wrapper 16 at one end serving to bind the bundle of bristles together, said wrapped end being formed in any suitable manner with any suitable filler, such as glue or the like, so as to correspond in shape to the frusto-conical space between the sockets 11 of the two side plates and within which the brush element is securely clamped by means of the binding screws or bolts 13. The brush elements may be made in large quantities and of uniform size and construction so that the operator may easily fill the head consisting of the side plates and connecting parts, and after the brush has served its purpose and the elements have become worn, the worn elements may be discarded and a new set put in their place at a comparatively small cost and very small amount of time.
In addition to the binding screws 13 for securing the brush elements in place I provide for each of the side plates a stiffening bar 17 extending along the same from one end to the other, said bar spannig the spaces 18 between adjacent sockets and being connected by rivets or the like 19 to each of the sockets, making a stron and rigid construction. The ends 20' o the bars are bent inwardly around the sockets, as shown in Fig. 2 especially, and the opposing ends of the two stiffening bars may be clamped toward each other or together by means of a screw bolt 13 of the same character as those above described. In the process of 17 will be secured, as shown, to the side I plates and remain preferably-by means ofja pair of shells 2'2;
each shell being vformed to embrace the to the side plates between the bars 17 andthere after.
- y suitable form of handle 21 ibn'.
em oyed, i-tl samey be s red center socket member of each'side plate and 'also'havingsideflanges23 to be en aged by thescrews 13adjacentthe center 0 the devicarv The-shells are secured "permanently said plates .duringthe assemblage of the device at the factory. The handle may be secured invplace between the shell members :by meansofa bolt, rivet or the like, shown Having: thus described my inventiony-l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
f1. The herein described brush comprising a a pair of duplicate side plates, each being formed of a series of frusto-conical sockets and trapezoidal connecting webs, a s'tifi'enalong each of said side plates and secure to the several sockets, the ends of the .bar extending around the end sockets, and a series of brush elements arranged between the side plates, and detachpermanent parts thereof d I misfits ahleiglamping means acting through the. stijfienin'gbars and side'plates securing them iii-proper Po'sitio'n'and clamlping the'brush elements in place, substantia y as set forth.
The herein described brush constructron Yeomprisii1g, in combination a pair'of duglicate side plates formed ofs'heet inetal an eomprising aeseries of curved sockets connected by flat. webs, said webs havin holes therethrou'gh, a stiffening bar exten :ing-"along'e'aeh side plate and-secured permanently to the severalsocket parts, -'-a pair of handle securing shells secured to the sev- "erai side plates between the-plates and said bars a series of brush elements of uniform size and shape detachably arrangedbetween.
"the side plates; and detachable means'o rsting through the side plates, the ends '0 the i bars and said shell'members, serving to se- {22" cure the parts together with-the brush elements between the plates and a handle between the handle members. i
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence'of tWO subscribing witn 1 h r d HOWARD 0. BROWN.
