In the construction shown, I have `employed shields 17 for the opposite sides of the broom head, such shields being held in position by the binder 15, inwardly bent portions of the binder being pressed into engagement withsockets 18 in the opposite face portions of the shields. In the construction shown, the sockets 18 are in the form of openings extending through the face portions of the shields 17. By the engagementof the inwardly projecting bends of the binder withthe sockets of the shield at opposite faces of the broom head, the shield is held very securely in position. Y Y

In the construction illustrated, each of the shields 17' isformed: of sheet *meta-ll which is pressed into shape for fitting over the shoulders of the broom head. Each face portion of the shield is preferably provided with outwardly pressedribs 19-eXtending in diagonal position toward. the binder 15 serving very materiallyv tostrengthen the shields. r he shieldsl-T are also preferably grooved horizontally to a slight extent for receiving the binder 15,and outwardly pressed ribs 2O are provided' along theV outer face of the shield aboveand below the binder 15. The edge of the sheet. metalf making up the shield is preferably turned inwardly, as is best shown at 21 in Fig. 4 for. exerting a stronger grip upon the broomzhead material.

@n opposite faces of the broom head between the shields 17, I have provided flat shields 22, also preferably formed of sheet metal.: In the construction shown, the shieldsv 22 at opposite faces of the head are formed integrally with eachother, being bent into form from a single sheet of material, a central opening being provided between the shieldfportionsfor mounting the device upon the handle 12Jand the handle securing means at the upperend of the head.V The edge portions' of the shields 22 are also preferably turned"inwardly,ias is vindicated at 23 in Fig. 4 for, obtaining a; stronger hold upon the broom headimaterial.` The shields 22 are secured in position at their lower ends by means ofthe binder 15, inwardly projecting bends of whichY engage sockets-24 in the shields for securing-the shields firmly in position;

By the use ofmyinvention'I have provided a broom which is held very rigidly in the desired shape, the construction being such that there is veryl little if any danger of the Structure becoming weakened by continued use. The shields 17 and 22 are held very strongly in position so as to afford ample protectionI for the broom head materialA at the points where such material would otherwise be injured by contact with machinery or other parts in the useof the broom. The arrangement is such that the binding means and shields are capable ofapplication to a broom very quickly and easily byV the use of comparatively simple" machinery.

While I prefer to employ the construction as illustrated in the drawing, it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the exact form shown except so far as certain of the claims may be so limited by opposite one face, and a crimped metallic .i

binder in the form of an endless band tightened about the head and about said shield with an inwardly projecting bend of the binder engaging said socket in the shield.

A broom comprising in combination a bundle'of broom head material, means for binding the material compactly together at the upper endl of the head, sheet metal shields bent about the edges of the headV having horizontally disposed grooves pressed in their outer faces and having sockets in transverse alignment with said grooves, and a crimped metallic binder tightened about the head and said shields and engaging the grooves in the shields, with inwardly projecting bends of the binder engaging said sockets in the shields for holding such parts in fixed relationship.

A broom, comprisingin combination a bundle of broom head material, means for bindingl the head material compactly together at the upper end of the head, flat shields at opposite faces of said bundle having sockets therein respectively at the same transverse plane through the head, means for securingsaid flat shields in position at the upper end of the head, and a crimped metallic binder tightened about the head and shields with inwardly projecting bends of the binder engaging said sockets in the flat shields for bracing them in position.

A broom, comprisingin combinati-on a bundle of broom headA material, means for binding'the head material'compactly together at the upper end of the head andfor securing a handlel in position thereon', iiat' shields formed integrally with each other'from a pieceof sheet material bent upon itself and having an opening threadedron the handle means with sockets in said shields r`espectively at the same transverse plane through the head, and a crimped metallic binder tightened about the head and shields with inwardly projecting bends of the binder engaging said sockets in the fiat shields for bracing them in position.
