Description

y 19, 1- c. KOOTZ I 1 ,805;490
IOP CONSTRUCTION Filed Aug. 15, 1927 Patented May 19, .1931 r V UNITED STATES- ARTHUR c. KOO'I'Z, or MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN MOP consrnuo'rion The object of the invention is to provide a mop in which the mop material is hung from a wire frame the ends. of which" may be readily and securely attached to the pivoted p 5 connector of the mop handle and permit it to be readily taken off for washing. More particularly, the preferred construction provides a mop in which the handle and the framehave a substantially universal jointv connection so that the mop may be used in veryrestricted places that are not accessible to mops of the ordinary pivoted handle type. g
The invention further consistsin the. 'seva eral features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by, claims at the conclusion hereof. 7
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a mop embodying the invention, be fore assembly; I
Fig. 2 isa detail view of the assembled mop viewed from within the same,showing one position of the operatinghandle,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. '2 showing another view of theoperating handle m Fig. 4 is a detail sectionalviewtaken on theline1-4ofFig.2; I
Fig. 5 is a detail view showing a modified form of frame connection.
Inthe drawings the mop body '6 is shown as of usual construction comprising the mop strands 7 of yarn or other "suitable'material or strips 8 and 9 of canvas or other suitable fabric, which strips are also secured by the. stitching 10 to form a frame-receiving channel or pocket 11.
The frame 12 is formed of relatively heavy wire, preferably of triangular shape, to obtain the advantages Well known in this art of getting into corners or other restricted spaces, and extends through thepocket 11 and the ends 13 of said frame extend inwardin'pivotal connection therewith.
Application filed August 15; 1927.. SeriaI NYo 212,933.
securely clampedthereto by a bolt 17 passing said connector is provided'with spaced aper' tured bifurcations 18.
I n fejach instance means are provided for clamping the ends of the frame 12 firmly togetherand for securing thebifurcations 1 8 In Figs. l to 3, inclusive, this means includes a'pivot and clamping bolt '19 having .a wmg-nut' 20 and a channeled metal connector 21. This connector 21 is formed ofsheetfmetal bent toprovide a pair of channelsior recesses 22, each adapted to receive one of the free ends of the frame and the bolt; 1' 19'passes through the apertures in the bifurcations18and the upstanding legs of the connector 21, two 'ofwhich are centrally disposed and'o'ne at each end abutting the adjacent bifurcation 18. so that when the nut 20 is drawn up the ends of the frame aretightly through the spaced ears of said portion and clamped.betweenvadjacent legs of the 'connector '21and the bifurcations are also fric-'v tionally held as the connector so that the handle will readily retain its adjustediposi tion relative to .theframe;
lVith this construction the. handle may be adjusted vertically to any desired inclination relative. to the frame and'I have also found that theframle permits the handle to be tilted laterally, as'shownin'Fig. 3, owing'to the which are stitched together between layers flexing of the free ends of the frame so that *the iheight of the handle above the mop body ing the bifurcations 18 in pivotal connection" therewith comprises a channel connector member 23 between whichand the pivot bolt 24 the free ends ofthe frame are disposed and clamped by the nut 25 and said bolt passing" through said connector 23 and the arms or bifurcatidns 18. and a washer 26, it J being noted that in this instance the free ends of the mop'frame are arranged in vertical alinement in the connector while in Fig;
2 the free ends are arranged in horizontal;
alinement, and that in both instances a free end of the frame is clamped between a portion of the connector and the pivot bolt.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any particular form or arrangement of parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a mop, the combination with a mop body having a frame-receiving pocket, of a frame extending through said pocket and having its free ends extending inwardly of its periphery, a frame connector comprising a sheet metal member bent to provide adj acently disposed yielding channel members providing pockets receiving the free ends of said frame, ahandle connector, and a pivot bolt extending through said handle connector and the inner and outer sides of said channel members above said pockets and applying pressure to draw the sides of said channel members together to clamp the ends of the frame thereto.
2. In a mop, the combination with a mop body having a frame-receiving pocket, of a mop'frame extending through said pocket and having its free ends extending inwardly of its periphery, a pivot bolt, a metal frameclamping connector having yielding portions engaging the free ends of said frame and confining them between said connector and the pivot bolt, and a handle connector, said pivot bolt securing said connectors together and extending through both connectors and applying pressure to said yielding portions of said frame-clamping connector to draw them together to clamp the ends of the mop frame thereto.
3. In a mop, the combination with a mop body having a frame-receiving pocket, of a frame extending through said pocket and having its free ends extending inwardly of its periphery, a channeled frame connector having yielding portions engaging the free ends of the frame, a. handle connector, and a pivot bolt clamping said connectors together and clamping said ends between the yielding portions of said frame connector.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature.
ARTHUR C. KOOTZ.
