Description

H. POST. BROOM HANDLE. ABPLIUATION FILED NOV. 22, 1909.
Patented Aug. 23, 191 0.
I, III J HENRY POST, OF ESGANABA, MICHIGAN.
BROOM-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1910.
Application filed November 22, 1909. Serial No. 529,219.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Pos'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Handles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in detachable broom handles.
The object of the invention is to provide a detachable, hollow metal broom handle and means whereby the same may be securely at tached to and readily removed from a broom head.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a broom showing my improved handle connected thereto; Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional view through the upper end of the broom head and a portion of the handle; Fig. 3 is a similar view of the up per end of the handle showing the closing plug arranged therein; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the handle is formed; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the blank from which the attaching ferrule is formed.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, my improved broom handle 1 is formed from a sheet metal blank 2 which is cut preferably as shown in Fig. A of the drawings, said blank being bent until its opposite edges come into engagement, thus forming a tube of the desired length and which is tapered slightly from its lower end to a point near its outer end from which point the outer portion of the handle flares slightly to its outer end as shown.
At suitable intervals along one edge of the blank 2 from which the handle is formed are cut recesses 3, which are preferably substantially dove-tailed in shape and are adapted to receive similarly shaped projections at formed at opposite points along the opposite edge of the blank 2, as clearly shown in the drawings. The projections 4 when engaged with the recesses 3 form an interlocking connection between the engaging edges of the blank and, if desired, said engaging edges may be soldered or welded together thus forming a strong, durable and rigid handle.
After the lower end of the handle has been engaged with the wooden handle 5 and upper end of the broom head, said end is rigidly clamped together and into engagement with the broom head and the handle 5 by means of a clamping ferrule 7 which is arranged on the broom handle and is adapted to be slipped down onto the engaging end of the handle, thus securely but detachably binding the same onto the broom head. The ferrule 7 is also preferably formed from a sheet metal blank 8, the edges of which are brought together and secured in the same manner as described in connection with the handle portion of the broom. In the outer end of the handle 1 is inserted a plug 9 which may be formed of wood, metal or any suitable material and which provides a closure and a finish for the outer end of the handle. a
A broom handle constructed in accordance with my invention will be strong, durable and light in construction and may be readily disconnected from and connected to abroom head, thus providing for the repeated use of the handle which will result in a great saving of material. Furthermore, by the use of a detachable handle such as herein shown and described, the broom heads may be packed in more compact bundles, thus taking up less room and being less likely to breakage in shipment than the long handled brooms, and, when packed in this manner, may be shipped at a much lower freight rate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A broom handle comprising a broom head with a short wooden handle, a ferrule slidably mounted on said handle and having means thereon so as to clamp the same to the In testimony whereof I have hereunto set handle an elongated tubular handle having my hand 1n presence of two subscriblng l0 lts lower end slldably mounted in the lerrule Witnesses.
and having a series of clamping means on HFNRY POST opposite edges, whereby to clamp the same together, the upper end of said handle be- Vitnesses:
ing elongated and having an opening there- A. H. RYALL,
in, and a plug secured in said opening. MAYME MCGRAW.
