To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAmnL W. SomiNcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county -of Wyaimlotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful improvements in: Brooms; and lIdo declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to broom heads and particularly to a device adapted to receive a broom straw or brush unit in such manner that it can be readily removed for the introduction of a new broom unit when the previously introduced one becomes worn.

I have provided a simple, durable and efiicient, as well as inexpensively constructed, broom head which will be practically indestructible, and I contemplate 1 providing broom units of broom straw or brush whic 1 can be made up ready for insertion into the head and carried by the dealer so that the purchaser need only obtain a new unit in order to restore the broom to its original condition.

I have also provided a broom head which can be manipulated in a convenient manner without the use of special tools.

In order to illustrate the generic principle of my invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, it being understood, however, that changes in form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference:

Patented July that the jaws 2 and 3 will inherentl spring apart, as indicated in Fig. II. 'l he jaws 2 and 3 are provided with inturned flanges 4 and 5, which are' notched or slit, as at 6 and 7 respectively, so that the jaws may readily flex when released by the clamping screw or bolt 8. The j aw 2 is provided with bosses 9 and 10, having elongated slots 11 and 12 and the jaw 3 is provided with bosses 13 and 14 having openings 15 and 16 to receive the bolts 8 and 8. The openings 15 and 16 may be threaded to receive the threaded ends of the bolts 8 and 8' and, if desired, locking nuts 17 may be employed on the ends thereof.

The lower ends of the jaws 2 and 3 are provided with inturned flanges 18 and 19, which are adapted to engage with the sides of the broom unit 20, shown as consisting of longitudinally arranged fibers or strands secured together in proper form by one or more lines of stitching 21 in the usual manner of sewing brooms;

The 11 per end of the head is provided with a t readed neck 22 into which may be screwed the broom handle 23, the handle I being preferably secured against displacement by a transverse bolt 24, passing through the head and secured in place by a fastening device shown as a nut '25.

When the parts are in the position shown in Fi II, the broom unit may be introduced into the jaws and the bolts caused to enter the openings 15 and 16, whereupon the jaws may be drawn together either by screwing the bolts into the bosses 13 and 14 or by the nuts 17, and drawing thejaws together will cause the flanges 18 and 19 to tightly engage against the sides of the broom unit and hold it securely in place. When the broom unit becomes worn, it will be only necessary to release the bolts, take out the old unit and introduce the new one, and since it is proposed to make up these units ready for sale, it will be obvious that a complete broom may be made up in an expeditious manner.

By reference to Fig. II, it will be observed that the slots 11 and 12 are elongated. This is to permit the jaws to readily spring apart when the bolts are released.

In actual practice the members 2 and 3 may be struck up from sheet metal and screwed or otherwise secured together along the seam 26.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:

1. In a broom head, a hollow member having a handle-receiving neck, the lower end of the member being slitted to provide flexible jaws, intnrned, spaced flange members along the ends oi the flexible jaws, movable apart when the jaws are expanded and movable together when the-jaws are in clamping position, and means for drawing the flexible v jaws together;

' 2Q Ina broom head, a hollow member having a handle-receiving neck, the lower end of the member being slitted to provide flexible j aws, inturned, spaced flexible members along the ends of the respective jaws to close the spaces'between said jaws, the spaced flange members bein movable apart when the jaws are expande and movable together when the jaws are in clamping position, inwardly projecting teeth on the lower ends of the jaws, and means for drawing the flexible jaws together.

3. In a broom head, a hollow member having a handle-receiving neck, the lower end of the broom member being slitted to provide flexible jaws, intnrned, spaced flange members along the ends of the respective jaws to close the space between the jaws, means for drawing the jaws together into clamping position, and a handle-engaging bolt passing transversely through the head.
