COMB-CLEANER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 525,337, dated September 4,-1894.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH COOPER, of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Cleaning Combs, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

My invention has relation to improvements in devices for cleaning combs.

It is the object of my invention to provide a simple and yet, at the same time, efficient device for extracting the dandruff and other sediment, which settles between the teeth of combs.

The invention consists of the devices and parts, or their equivalents, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a side elevation of the device, and Fig. 2, is a plan view thereof.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in both figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings the letter A indicates the handle of the implement. This handle is provided at one end with a series of inward extending slits a, which are adapted to receive the inner ends of cleaning blades B, said blades being held securely in place within the slits by means of a rivet C. These blades gradually converge toward their outer ends, so that the passages between the blades gradually narrow outward. The opposite longitudinal edges of the blades are corrugated or toothed as indicated at b. V

It will be noticed that the teeth or corrugations of one of the edges are smaller than the teeth of the opposite edge. These smaller teeth are adapted especially for cleaning fine toothed combs.

The end of the handle opposite to the end receiving the cleaning blades is provided with a socket into which the end of a small brush D is secured by means of a suitable glue, or equivalent. It will also be noticed that the opposite sides of the blades are provided with projections or ribs 1).

In utilizing the improved implement, the rear ends of the cleaning blades are passed into the spaces between the teeth of the comb. The blades are then drawn transversely through the spaces of the comb, and the teeth or corrugations of the blades engage the dirt or sediment at the bottom of the teeth spaces, while the projections or ribs b engage the dirt on the sides of the teeth. As the spaces between the cleaning blades gradually narrow toward the outer ends of said blades, of course each tooth embraced by the blades will be clamped tighter toward the outer ends of the blades, and the dandruff and dirt thereby more eifectually removed, this being especially true in regard to the sediment which settles against the sides of the teeth. The cleaning blades are preferably constructed of spring metal, so as to provide for a certain amount of yield, and thereby adapt the device to difierent sizes of combs, in which the teeth are arranged at varying distances apart. After the cleaning blades have been drawn through the teeth spaces of the comb a requisite number of times, the handle Ais reversed, and the brush D utilized. This brush will serve to remove the dirt which has been lo0sened by the teeth of the blades.

From the above description it will be seen that I provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive and usefularticle of manufacture, accomplishing what has heretofore been accomplished only after considerable trouble and annoyance.

Having thus described my invention, what i I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an improved article of manufacture, a comb cleaner consisting of a handle and a series of flat blades secured thereto, said blades having one or bothof their longitudinal edges provided with teeth, and having their opposite sides provided with projections or ribs, substantially as set forth.
