* twED-swa PATENT EYQ Y JAMEsfEnGAn, nEcnAsnn, LATE or BR-ooKLYN, new YORK, BY JOHN rnnnnn iof PIERSON AND'JAMEsR. PIE3SON.'EXECUTORS,. or NnwYoR-K, a. Y.
To all whom it may concern: 7 V
\ Be itknewn that JAMES EDGAR, deceased, late. a citizen of the 'United States and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Currycombs, of which the following is a spe'cification.
lhe object of this invention is the produce ticn of increased strength and durability of construction of curry. combs with coincident reduction of the number of parts and the cost of manufacture {and assemblage thereof.
The novel features of construction'and arrangementwill hereinafter more fully ap pear and the same form thesubject of the appended claims. V v
Figure 1 represents in longitudinal section, on line I-I"of Fig. 3, a curry comb embodying this invention showing the handle in elevatirn; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line IL-II of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows; Figf3 is a plan view of the same curry comb; Fig. 4. represents a view in perspective of the front combing bar provided with the improved integral lmocking lugs,
' two rivets 5, a strengthening shank or brace 6 extends under the back plate centrally thereof and is inserted in the handle 3 preferably for half the length thereof, so that the back-plate, comb-bars and handle form one complete rigid structure. The back plate is formed with two raised or embossed stiffening ribs 7 diverging forwardly from a point adjacent theend of the shank 2 and merging at their forward ends into a raised or offset end portion 8. Such offset end porticn constitutes a lateral stiffening rib and forms a seat for the front combing bar as will be hereafter more fully described. The
raised or embossed ribs 9 extending longi-' tudinally of the back plate adjacent the ed es thereofare also and preferably pro vided thereon, to aid in stiffening the structure. The combing bars 4 of inverted U shape each form two blades 4" which may.
be provided with the usual scurfing edges or ounnYooMB.
teeth 10, or some ortall ofzthe blades be I formed with smooth edges, without teeth,-
if'desired; Theflat'backs 4 of one or more of the U-shape-ccmb bars are extended in projecting relation beyond the ends of the vertical. combing or scurfing." bladesai ftf thereof, as more plainly shown in'FigsfQ and 4, and such extended ends are stamped orpressed into semi-spherical or rounded the seat on the back plate formed by theoffset portionS thereof, in which position it is secured by two rivets, one at each endof the bar and with the crimped end portions 11 projecting laterally from the margin of Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Febl22f19i6. i Application filedfApril29,1910. Serial No. 558,499; .3 7'
the' back-platel and constituting knocking v blocks upon which the curry comb may be 1 struck against the floor or other solid object to dislodge accumulations of dirt and scale therein. i f
By means of the construction above described the strain and shock due to such use of the knocking lugs-is mostadvantageously received since the lugs are integral with'a the back plate by reason of the offset 8 there i of and by reason of the fact-that such ofiset forms a rib that is-connected to other ribs in such a manner that the strain is distributed throughout theie'xtent of the back plate and thence to the handle.
It will readily be seen that a curry comb embodying this, invention is of great strength, and comprises a minimum number of parts there being required only two rive ets for securing each combing barin position and no extra rivets for the knocking lugs, the strain thereon being eifectually guarded against through the design and construction of the back plate and the novel positioning of the combing bar having the knocking lugsintegral therewith. Q I
Nhile a particular form of curry comb. embodying this invention is above shown and described it will readily be understood by thoseskilled in the artthat changes and modificationsmay be made in the design,
construction, combination and location of parts without departing from the spirit of combing bar and'lie closely in the plane of the invention as set forth in the claims hereto appended.
Claims: 1 1. In a.curry'comb, the combination with a sheet metal back plate of a U-shaped sheet metal combing bar secured beneath the for- Ward part of said plate and having the ends 1 of its top portion extended to form knocking lugs, said knocking lugs beingof cupped 7 formation.
2. 1m a curry comb the combination of a sheet metal back plate having an upwardly pressed reinforcing channel extending across extended beyond the plate and forming cnpshaped knocking lugs.
'3sln'a curry comb the combination of a sheet metal back plate having a transverse rib extending across its forward portion and diverging ribs extending from the base of the shank portion obliquely torW-ard andi outward and connecting With the-end poretionsofsuch transverse rib and forming therewith a triangular reinforcement of sald metal back'plate With a combing bar.
extended beyond the sides of the plate to being of cupped formation.
