Description

(No Model.)
C. A. BARTLIFF.
JOINT FOR EXTENSION HANDLES.
Patented Aug. 2, 1887.
WITNESS s= 2 INVHNTOR:
BY Zuwm Z ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JO|NT FOR EXTENSION-HANDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,584, dated August Application filed October 30, 1886. Serial No. 217,623. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. BARTLIFF, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Exten sion I-Iandles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly in section, of the improved joint; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a handle and its extension connected by the improved joint or coupling.
The invention will first be described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A represents a socket adapted to be placed upon the end of any sup 'ilcmental handle and secured in any suitable manner thereto. The inner end of the socket is closed by a partition, A, which is concaved on its outer face at the juncture of the socket with the extension B, so that a seat is formed for the end of the handle proper of any article-sueh as a broom, mop, or brush, for instance to rest in. Extension B is of semicircular form in crosssection, and has lugs D D on one side edge and oppositely-arranged lugs E E on its opposite side edge.
Curved spring bands, straps, or wires F are secured at one end to the lugs D D, and their opposite ends are screw-threaded and passed down through apertures in the lugs E E, and to these ends are fitted the winged nuts G, by turning which the loops formed by the spring or flexible bands may be adjusted to receive different sizes of handles.
The improved joint or coupling is more especially intended for use with brooms, brushes, and mops, though it may be used wherever it may be found useful. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V 1. A joint or coupling for handles, comprising a socket provided with a longitudinal extension and transverse adj ustable bands or wires connected at their ends to the opposite side edges of the said extension, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a socket formed or provided with a semicircular extension having oppositely-arranged lugs on its side edges, of flexible bands each connected at one end to one lug on one side of the extension and adjustably connected at its other end to the op posite lug, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the tubular socket having a longitudinal extension curved in cross-section and provided on its opposite side edges with lugs, of spring bands or wires each secured at one end to one of said lugs, the opposite ends being screw-threaded and passed down through the opposite lugs, and adjusting-nuts on the said threaded ends, substantially as set forth.
