PATENT OFFICE.
BRUS H.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No '7 55,985, dated March 29, 1904.
Application filed August 21, 1903- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEFAN ZAOSEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to brushes of the kind which consist of an elongated back or head carrying the hair or bristles and a handle which screws into the head at its middle point.
The object of the invention is to provide a brace applicable to any of such brushes and adapted to prevent the handle from unscrewing from its socket in. the head and also to brace the handle and make the brush more rigid. It is the common experience with these brushes that after they have been a short time in use the handle unscrews from the socket, and while a wrapping of paper or other material is used to tighten the handle this does not prove satisfactory and the brush is kept in service only with great inconvenience. I take the brush, either old or new, and apply my improved brace thereto, which absolutely prevents the rotation of the handle in .the socket. My device is not a socket or means for holding the handle on the brush, but is to strengthen the construction of brushes in the particular of effectually securing the parts in the position in which they are originally made at the factory. The device can be removed and replaced as often as desired, and therefore can be used on many different brushes. It will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is 'a perspective view of the head of a brush and part of the handle with my improved brace applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a section transverse to the handle on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1.
A represents the head of a brush consisting of an elongated block having hair or'bristles (0 attached in the usual manner to its under face. The handle is indicated by B and is provided with a threaded end which is secured to the head by screwing into a socket a therein. Two of these sockets are usually provided,
Serial No. 170,268. (No model.)
the extra one being shown in the drawings, so that when the hair of the brush has been deflected in one direction by long use the handle can be adjusted to the opposite side of the head.
My improved brace consists, essentially, of two U-shaped arms 6 and 0, respectively, the members of which diverge somewhat and at the bend are turned laterally, as shown at b, to form a seat adapted to fit around the handle. The extremities of these arms have hooks 0, those on the arm Z) passing over and around the front edge of the head A, while those on the arm 0 pass under the rear edge of 'the head a. On account of the inclination of the handle B one of these arms is shorter than the other. One
embraces the upper side of the handle, while the other embraces the lower side, and the members of each part are substantially paral- -lel to'each other along each side of the bandle. At a point below the bend b of the arm 6 a bridging plate e connects the two members of the arm together and has a curved seat.
adapted to rest against the handle. The extremities of this plate-are curled around the two members of the arm and are provided with two holes, one near each end. The arm 0 is similarly equipped with a plate 6'. Threaded bolts f f and wing-nuts f complete the device, which is applied to the brush in the following manner: The arm I; is hooked over the outer or front edge of the brush-head and its curved portion I) brought down against the handle. The arm 0 is then similarly engaged with the rear edge of the brush-head and the opposite side of the handle. The bolts f are then passed through the openings in the two plates e and e and the nuts f screwed down equally and until the pressure of the plates 6 and e" and of the curved portions Z) is suificient to prevent the unscrewing of the handle. In use it will be seen that since the arms- I) and 0 diverge from a point on the handle above the socket they form braces which make the brush very rigid, and the grip of the two arms upon the handle prevents the unscrewing alluded to. The device can be readily removed by unscrewing the nuts and removing the bolts.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with a brush consisting of a head havingasocket and ahandle fitting into said socket, of a brace consisting of two U-shaped arms applied to the opposite sides of the handle and provided at their extremities with hooks which engage respectively with the outer and inner edges of the brushl head and a clamp adapted to clamp the two arms against the opposite sides of the handle, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a brush-head having a socket, and a handle fitting into said socket, of two U shaped arms each being bridged by a plate intermediate of its extremities and the bend, the extremities of each arm having hooks adapted to engagetlie head of the brush and the bend of each arm being turned at right angles to form a seat for the handle of the brush, and bolts and nuts adapted to secure the two bridging-plates together and clamp the arms against the opposite sides of the handle.
In witness whereof I subscribe my signature in presence of two witnesses.
