UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN EPTING, OF STBOUDSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN FLOOR-SCRUBBERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,081, dated July 1, 1879; application filed April 5, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, JOHN EPTTNG, of Stroudsburg, in the county of Monroe and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Oombined Floor Scrubber and Scraper, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan of the scraper side of the device. Fig. 2 is afront view of the scrubber side of the device, showing the application of the scrubber to the floor. Fig.3 is an end elevation of the scrubber and scraper on line 00 :11, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish a cheap, simple, and durable device for cleanin g floors.
In the drawings, A represents a rectangular metal frame, upon the angle of which, about midway of its length, is fixed an upward-projectin g socket, B, for the reception of the handle. To the inside of this frame the flat metal plate G, preferably of steel, and the three plates D and F F, of rubber or other suitable elastic substance, are clamped by the rectangular metallic plate E (whose sides are narrower than, but of the same length as, those of the frame A) and the screws or bolts a a, that are passed through all of the plates, for the purpose of holding them together. The steel plate 0 then is set at aright angle to the plates D and F F, and all of them are made to project half an inch, or thereabout, outward from between the jaws of the clamp formed by the plates A and E. The plate 0,
which serves as the scraper, has a slightlycurved edge, so that it may better enter any The central one of the elastic pieces, D, serves as the scrubber, and is both wider and longer than the pieces F F, that serve as cushions to prevent it from destructively bending against the edge of the clamping frame and plate, and serve also to impart to it elasticity and resisting power.
For durability and elasticity the plate D is preferably composed of pure rubber, while the plates F F may be of some elastic fabric.
The screw or bolt holes through the plates 0 D and F F, or those through the frame and plate E, may be slotted, so that the scraper and scrubber may be adjusted at will.
It is obvious that this mode of construction and arrangement of parts secures the greatest strength and durability compatible with the desired lightness that can be arrived at in the manufacture of a combined scrubber and scraper.
The projection of the rubber and elastic plates at each end of the metal frame half an inch, or thereabout, to protect the washboards of a room, when scrubbing, from being scratched by the frame, and to facilitate the cleaning of the corners, is another advantage which this device possesses over all others with which I am acquainted.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I The combination of the elastic plates FF with the plate D, for the purpose of preventing the destructive bending of the latter when scrubbing, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN EPTING.
Witnesses: JOHN S. FISHER, WM. WEISS, J. APPENZELLER.
