ARTHUR H. HARRISON, OF DE KALB, ILLINOIS.
DUST-MOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1915.
Application filed February 24, 1914. Serial No. 820,517.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it' known that I, ARTHUR H. HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Kalb, in the county of Dekalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dust-Mops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the class of mops in which a fringe hangs over the edge-portion of a head-block provided with a handle.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a dust-mop provided with my improvement; Fig. 2 is a section on line 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on line 3, Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a lock-plate for securing the handle in adjusted position on the head.
The head 5, which carries the fringe 6, is of the preferred rhomb-shape illustrated to facilitate introducing it into and working it endwise in narrow spaces, and to adapt it to be used broadwise to cover a relatively large areain mopping. A screw-bolt 7 having its head countersunk centrally in the bottom of the head carries a wing-nut 8 on its up per projecting end, which passes through a lock-plate 9 permanently fastened, as by the nails shown, at the center of the top of the head and which is shown in its preferred form of a flat rectangular plate having scalloped upturned edges. Asocket 10, in which a handle 11 is fastened, has a longitudinallyslotted curved tongue 12 to seat against the plate 9, and tightening the nut against which clamps it down; and the tongue extends backwardly across a depressed section in the edge of the adjacent late-flange, whereby the handle, in using t e mop, is prevented from wabbling, as it would were no means provided to steady it, since the nut working on the screw is incapable of so tightening the socket that the handle will not turn in working the mop.
The slotted socket and screw and nut means for attaching the handle to the head, while desirable on any form of the head, is
peculiarly advantageous in connection with a head of rhomb-shape, for it greatly facilitates adjustment of the handle not only to extend it at different angles of elevation for convenience in using the mop, but also to ex tend it over the apex of either end of the head, for working the mop endwise, or over the apex of either side for working the mop broadwise, or at any point between end and side apexes. It is practically useless, however, without some means, such as the lockplate, for steadying the handle, since a wabbling handle on a dust-mop renders the latter very objectionable.
What I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is A dust-mop comprising, in combination, a head, a lock-plate permanently fastened on the head and having upturned flanged edges containing depressions, a screw-bolt projecting from the top of the head through said plate and provided with a nut, and a handlesocket having a curved slotted tongue bearing on the plate and through which the bolt passes, said socket being releasably fastened by the nut with the tongue confined in a depression in said plate to be raised and turned on the bolt for adjustment on loosening the nut.
