SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 501,084, dated July 11, 1893. Application filed March 11, 1891. Renewed November 4, 1891. Again renewed February 8, 1893. Serial No. 461,424. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISRAEL L. LANDIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Holders, of which the following is a specification,reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved brush holder; Fig. 2 a similar view showing the brush in a difierent position from Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a longitudinal sectional view of the improved holder and the connected brush and a portion of the upper end of the handle.

The invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements upon that class of brush holders covered by Letters Patent No. 186,399 and granted to me on the 16th day of January, 1877, wherein means are provided for readily shifting and adjusting the brush head to any desired angle with respect to the handle in order that the brush may be rendered effective for use in nooks and corners, access to which could not otherwise be had; and it consists in certain novel features of construction that will be fully hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.

The special object of the present invention is to provide'simple means for more effectively clamping and holding the brush in its adj usted positions, as will more fully hereinafter appear. I

In the drawings a designates an ordinary brush-head provided with a tapered screwthreaded hole in its lower edge for the reception of a metallic wood-screw b, which latter has its lower end formed into a fiat disk or plate I) having in its center a hole for the passage of the clamping screw. The cast metal handle-socket c is formed with openings in order that it may be lighter in weight and at the same time be more effective in screwed into the threaded aperture in the disk I c, the projecting end of the screw being pref erably provided with a lock-nut d.

Between the thumb-piece of the screw and the disk I) is interposed a metallic clamping plate ewhich is provided at one edge with a tongue e which loosely enters a recess formed for its reception in the end of the handlesocket, this .tongue serving to prevent the clamping plate turning upon the screw, thus insuring a firm and rigid clamping action between the parts and preventing the disks working loose prematurely when once set. This clamping arrangement enables me to do away with all interlocking lugs and recesses heretofore employed upon the adjacent faces of the disks to prevent their loosening after being set.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination of a brush-head a, a screw I) screwed into the brush-head and provided with a perforated disk, a handle socket provided with a similar disk overlapping the said disk, a thumb-screw connecting the twodisks together, and a clamping plate interposed between the thumb-piece of the screw and the adjacent disk and provided with a tongue adapted to enter a recess in the adjacent handle-socket, substantially as described.
